GIGABYTE z97p-d3 network adaptor not recognised

Hello,

I have the gigabyte z97p-d3 and I cannot get my Ethernet connection to work. There is no adapter in the device manager(even when I view hidden devices), and when I plug the cable in it is not recognized. The lights do not turn on, it is completely oblivious. Done diagnostic tests and the ethernet port is not recognized. When I open network connects through the control panel, there is no icon that signals a LAN connection. It is possible that it was deleted a few years ago.

Is it turned off in bios?
are there drivers installed?

I cannot install the drivers as the hardware is not recognised. I believe it is enabled in the bios. What is the setting that enables/disables it?

Page 28 of your manual. Make sure the LAN controller is enabled

It is enabled.

Then it's most likely dead. You should be able to get an lan adapter to go into one of the PCIe x1 slots - like this

Why would it be dead? What would have caused this? Is there nothing else I can do?
