murdalicious :
Hi guys, first off I'm currently running
q6600
evga 750i
4gb ram
22inch monitor @ 1650 x 1050 Res
8800gt overclocked.
I need some opinions for the following options. I have a friend who has a 8800gt and I was thinking of buying it off him ($100 CAD) so I can SLI my rig BUT he also wouldn't mind buying mine for the same price so that he can SLI! Should I buy his 8800gt or sell my 8800gt ($100 CAD). If i do sell my 8800gt what card should I get, I'm willing to spend about $200 after selling my 8800gt.
Another thing is, my friend's younger brother has a 9800gt, so I was thinking, He can sell me his 8800gt for $100 (CAD) and with it buy a 9800gt and grab his brother's 9800gt so he can SLI, and buy his brother a $100 card? We'll both end up spending $100 each and able to SLI?
I read that 8800gt/9800gt SLI can trade blows with a 4890, Tho the 4890 has 1g ram, it wouldn't matter because of my Res being @ 1650x1050, right?
Opinions please!!
Thanks
Well for the resolution you're running 2 8800GT in SLI will do a good job, however they need to be the same brand and clocked the same or they will not SLI together, even some of the same brand names are running different clocks, now you always have the option of BIOS flashing them to identical settings.
Seeing as how they're as old as they are BIOS flashing them shouldn't be a concern factor because you're past any warranty by now anyway, if that was even needed.
Personally IMO SLI is highly overated and in some games like Flight Sim X will do absolutely nothing what so ever for you, if the game cannot take advantage of SLI sometimes SLI will yield worse results than running a good single GPU setup.
I've past run 2 7800GTX in SLI, and then 2 8800GT in SLI and sometimes SLI can be rather disappointing, you were advised to snag the other card for testing purposes before you dive in, and I second that bit of advice.
Obviously since you and your friend have owned these 2 8800GT separately neither of you have run into heat issues with them, that will more than likely change when you slap 2 of them together in SLI, the bad thing about the 8800GT is it exhausts its heat inside the case.
I had run Zalman VF1000 coolers on mine which made a big difference in their load temperatures, of course mine were BIOS flashed and OC'd right out of the box, a good thing about the 8800GT was most could easily be OC'd with a substantial increase in performance.
I'm presently not running SLI I picked up a 9800GTX+ 1G which at 1920 X 1200 resolution out performs my 2 8800GT OC'd in SLI, so IMO their day has come and gone, I gave one to a friend of mine and the second is in my secondary gaming machine.
Hopefully your power supply will be adequate for the load, as long as it comes with 2 PCI-E 6 Pin connectors, without having to use any adapters you should be just fine, well let us know how it goes? Good Luck!
