I plan on getting rid of my i5 7500 and going for a r5 1600. I do plan on overclocking it. My question is this an upgrade for gaming or a sidegrade?
Just in case you are wondering I have a gtx 1060 6gb and 16 gb of ddr4 ram

Solution

In the current times of computer gaming, the i5 7500 and the r5 1600 trade blows, just depends on if the game is well suited for multi-threaded favor the 1600 or more demands on single threaded favor the 7500. Just realize that the best ram to put with your r5 1600 will be in the range of 2933 or 3200.

For gaming it is a downgrade.
You should read up on AMD overclocking. AMD's don't overclock all that well. Some are slightly fussy about their ram too. Check your ram for compatibility before you upgrade, or keep 150-200 or laying around in case you need to replace the ram.

Sidegrade at best. For gaming it could be even worse. Depends on the game and how high you get the clocks. In the reviews I've read, ryzen seems to top out around 4GHz. Here is the Toms review for the 1600.

Notice in GTA5 the 7500 is faster, while in Hitman it's slow. Neither really "beats" the other however. To be honest, it's a waste of money to buy a new board and CPU in this case.

I see what everyone is saying but with my time as a gamer I have seen games such as assassins creed origins, watch dogs 2, gta 5, civ 6, mass effect Andromeda and others be bottle necked by my cpu to the point where I could not hit 60 fps and or take full advantage of my gpu bc of the cpu. Wouldn't the r5 1600 be better for cpu intensive games such as these. I mean I dont care about how well the cpu's perform after 60 fps. All I care about is hitting 60 fps on REALLY REALLY core and thread intensive games

Then get a i5-8400. A much better gaming CPU. Check the price on the board and CPU on pcpartspicker.com

the 8400 with a z370 board at its cheapest comes out at $310 with a poor cpu fan, the r5 1600 with a b370 board and cpu with a decent spire fan comes at about $270. Im not ignoring your input I just wanted to see what your thoughts on those differences in price compared to performance was

Read a few reviews. At gaming it is not close. At multi-tasking, surfing, office work, etc the Ryzen does better.

If you aren't willing to pay for the upgrade, then save your money. The price will drop in the future. In a little while (3-4 months??) the 350 series motherboards should be out and a few bucks cheaper.

Look at the link I gave you. You are basically getting the same gaming CPU. At the cost of a new board and CPU. What GPU do you have? Why not just upgrade your GPU? I know you said it feels like a CPU bottleneck, why do you say that? Double check that link again, buying the 1600 isn't really going to help you.

Edit: Here is the final page.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-5-1600-cpu,5073-10.html

If you look at the chart, the 7500 and 1600 are right next to each other. With the 7500 being cheaper. Even if you OC the 1600 to 3.9GHz it's not that much faster then the 7500. You only gain ~5FPS or so. Even at $270, that's a lot of money to spend for not a lot more FPS.

I know for a fact that I am getting cpu bottleneck. I am reaching 99% cpu load on the cpu intensive games that I listed before while not reaching 60 fps and only reaching 70-80% gpu load. I do know for a fact that my cpu is a bottleneck in heavy core and thread usage games. I am going to upgrade my gpu as well though. I planned on getting a gtx 1080 next month. But my problem will not disappear even with a high gpu. I will still get 99% cpu load on intensive games and on those games my gpu will not be utilized to its max. As for the ram I have 3200 ddr4. The only thing that link you gave me proves is that the i5 7500 will outperform the ryzen 5 1600 in games that are not extremely taxing and the reviewer who put that up there also looked at max frame rates. I dont care about max frame rates. only 60 fps since my 1080p monitor and my 4k tv only support 60 fps anyways. And I am not going to upgrade those bc I really like them. I have seen ryzen 5 1600 beat out the i5 7600k in most heavily core and threaded used games.

tldr: r5 1600 can get 60fps assassins creed origins and other heavily threaded games bc of cores and threads and the i5 7600k and i5 7500 can not. I have checked and this has been proven in very heavy cpu usage areas of multiple games
