Thinking of a cpu to buy and i'm looking at the core i5 12400f for my asus z790-p d4 motherboard. On ebay it's going for 100 dollars. Is there another cpu that's bang for the buck? I'm looking at valorant with 280-300+ fps on all maps high settings (really, ALL MAPS) with an rtx 2080 super and 16gb ddr4 3600mhz ram

if you're pairing a CPU with a Z series chipset, you should look at the K SKU of processors. The F SKU's lack an iGPU, I opt for non-F SKU processor since an iGPU is invaluable when you need to diagnose discrete GPU related issues.

is my suggestion. You should also avoid Ebay for processors that are yet in production, so you're sorted with warranty. I'm assuming you're located in USA...since you didn't mention that in your post.

There is a continuous spectrum of price/performance cpu options for that motherboard.
I would not save pennies and buy a F processor without integrated graphics. In time the decision may be regretted.
Looking at ebay, i5-12400 and 12500 are a tad stronger and are selling at a similar price.

I also have a very hard budget limit.
