It depends how you see one is good (feature wise and effectiveness wise), for me jkdefrag scheduled once a week is enough. And I also deem intelligent defragmenter as unnecessary as sometimes they might be idiot.
I'm using Diskeeper and havent had any problems with it. Contrary to some experiences here, i find the real time background working perfectly without any interruption.

Using windows vista and diskeeper 2008 pro, I actually had vista tell me diskeeper was slowing down my system startup. Also, my system actually blue screened multiple times with it installed, Uninstalled, my system is actually faster and more stable. here I thought it was vista, in fact it was just diskeeper +vista.
So, while perhaps some instability went away I still just felt that my system was actually slower with it then without.
They say all defragers are based on the same windows api. This means they all do the same thing using the same technology. Some are just more efficent. Given the cost of diskeeper, its difficult to recommend over a program that is free like jkdefrag or auslogics. Granted the automatic back round is nice. Anytime you have any programs running in the back round it will slow down your system, just the nature of the beast. Ever notice how a fresh windows install flies, after you have your system the way you like it, with all your apps and utilities installed and it takes 100 percent longer to start up and it seems less responsive? Just the way it is, so spare it whenever necessary.

Not quite.
The Windows defrag API is to allow any defragger to move a file on the hard disk during Windows operation. How the files are moved, in what order they're moved, how efficiently they're moved, whether free space is consolidated or not, whether consideration is given to how often a file is read/written, etc. are all functions of the defrag software.
The free defrag software will use the Windows API to defrag files but that's it. If you want to defrag your free space, order your files for optimal access, or defrag files that aren't defraggable by the Windows API (like the directory structures, the MFT, and the pagefile), you have to have a much better defragger.
