I know there's a stickied "what's the best keyboard" thread and I'm definitely burning through it as we speak, but I think everyone can agree that the "best keyboard" is an answer that changes from purpose to purpose, so I figured I'd outline what I need my keyboard for and get some feedback from the people here at Tom's:
The rig itself is a solid gaming setup that aims to replace our PS4. I've been playing PC since the first Diablo but my girlfriend was all-console, so when I put together my rig she didn't realize that it was capable of playing the same triple A titles as our PS4 but with mods and better framerates and backwards compatibility and etc. (I think she thought PC gaming was just, old DOS games with a keyboard) Anyways, it's plugged into the TV (I'm not a pixel peeper, 60 refresh rate is A-OK with me) and running a gamepad *most* of the time, whether it's a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller.
However, I do still need a keyboard/mouse, I'm an avid fan of Total War, XCOM, Civilization, Starcraft; games you just don't play on a controller. Thus, I'm looking for something that's:
- Wireless, since it's going across the living room
- Preferably with a mouse on the same USB dongle, so I don't flood my ports
- Got media controls - just a play/pause/skip/volume set is great but those keyboards with little screens that say the song seem SO nice for gaming - I just always forget to jot down a model name when I see one!
- Obviously being super high performance is not a concern, it's all turn-based stuff (or in the case of TW/Starcraft, pretty casual offline play)
