[citation][nom]hellwig[/nom]I think auto-complete is fast enough, why bother with this? I can't imagine the load this must put on their servers.[/citation]
When you can search a trillion web pages for textual information (as of July 2008 Google says of non duplicate indexing), or Google guessing what you want to find...and get the information in less than .20 seconds...I think their servers will be fine...

The problem here is that each time a new letter is typed, a request is sent to the engine and return irrelevant information in most cases. It's better to have the search once after the user has completely written his search keyword then look for the relevant results.

Dudes...
I was thinking to my self how much computacional power Google have....
Maybe in 2020 NASA become near of it...
lol
hehehe

I think it's awesome so far, played with it extensively at work and home today on fast internet connections, started just typing random phrases letter by letter and watched what came up along the way, great fun!

I'm just curious what will happen when I'm on my netbook in a poor 3g reception zone, and it tries to reload the page every keystroke. I know it's not a huge page, but when you're trying to eke out every last drop of speed (something Tom's knows all too well), every kB counts.

I guess ideally Google would detect your connection speed and throttle back the reloading when it senses you may not have the ability to handle it.

What is it with websites incorporating these STUPID "features" that no one asked for. There was NOTHING wrong with the old way.....why change it. Learned to really HATE the whole "suggestion feature" when Firfox first introduced it in their browser, and left no way to turn it off.... now it's Google's turn I see. Oh well, Google's been going down the crapper for years, why be surprised....

It works when you're not signed in as well. The instant repositioning of the Google search bar kind of annoys me. I wish they'd just put it up the top to start with instead of making you start typing and then have to reposition your gaze to the top of the screen. It's not very efficient. Luckily Google AU doesn't have this yet. Then again, we never had bouncing balls either. I use the firefox Google page now to avoid all the stupid additions Google have made to their home page lately.

I noticed this today. I HATE it. I turned off the autocomplete feature on my phone for texting. I couldn't stand it. It was usually wrong and I kept having to backspace. I presume something like this is next.

I don't like it just because it's burning way too much bandwidth for absolutely no reason. For example if I'm searching "firefox 4 optimization guide" I don't need results for "firefox", "firefox 4", "firefox 4 optimization".

I use Yahoo 95% of the time, but I recently searched on Google. I really HATE this new "instant search" crap. It's distracting when the screen changes every time I type a letter in. Hopefully Yahoo won't copy it.

Not bad. You can always turn it off if it annoys you. I tried to do naughty searches with the SafeSeaarch function off but it's not working. Each time I become more specific, I get not result and a "Press Enter to search." message. I guess Google's ahead of us on this one! 😉

I find it no coincidence that they're now caching a lot more information, gathering and collecting more of your information, and all just a couple days after they announced that they're "simplifying" their Privacy Policy by removing much of the legalistic terms, which you can read about HERE.

Read my reply to that article for more info.
