[citation][nom]John Herlihy[/nom]Every recent product announcement we have made – and of course we have a desktop version – is being made from the point of view of it being used on a high-performance mobile phone [/citation]

What a fool. That will certainly be wonderful once a high performance mobile phone comes into existence. At the moment, there is no such thing except on the sci-fi channel.

I work in a fortune 100 as well, you're right. Cellphones with camera's typically aren't allowed in large businesses. It's probably the single reason RIM sells their high end blackberry products in variants without cameras such as my 8830, and it's definitely the reason I'm not allowed to get a droid on the company account.

Google definitely need's to be taught some humility, unfortunately it seems like Microsoft is the company that's going to do it.. which probably isn't any better.

I agree cloud computing has lots of potential. In fact, MS already declared that 70% of their resources are working on cloud computing. However, this DOES NOT MEANS desktop will be a passe. There are many use for desktop, from CAD, to web surfing (no matter how powerful the smartphone is, nothing beats big 20"++ widescreen for surfing), documents editing, photo editing...not to mention gaming.

Just like ipod...it's cool(supposely, frankly, i don't give a crap about ipod or mp3 players), but it's no replacement for your dedicated hi-fi system for serious music experience.

[citation][nom]shubham1401[/nom]Does your Cellphone runs Crysis?[/citation]
i even crtl+F crysis, just to find this comment 😀
+2 for ur ingenuity 😛

I go along with many of you here, but maybe not entirely for all the same reasons. For me, a cell phone is more of an annoyance than anything. Sure, you need to communicate, but it has gotten completely out of hand. There is a bubble forming that like everything else, is going to burst. People, you are paying tons of money every month so you can text, chat, and surf the web all day long? Social networking? What the? Haven't you got anything better to do?
I guess maybe I am a little old fashion, I have a cell phone, not a smart phone. I normally use less than 60 minutes a month. I use it to call people, and my typical conversation goes like this: "Hey Bill, fishin, Saturday, 6AM, I'll be put'n in at the south launch, yeah, okay....see you Saturday.....click".
When I bought the phone, the guy says, "you get a free Blue Tooth worth $100 with it, on special this month!"
I say "why do I need a Blue Tooth?"
He says "haven't you heard, it is going to be a law very soon that you must use a hands free device while driving"
I say "Then I don't need the Blue Tooth thing, because I don't use the phone while I am driving, you are supposed to be paying attention to the road and what is going on around you. Why don't you just give me the extra hundred off my bill"
He just stands there with a dumb look on his face.
So, I guess maybe I am still living in the dark ages as far as the phone goes. I will keep my desktop around for a while I think.
I also don't see all the desktops in my office going away anytime soon either. Google, I am afraid you have missed this one by a long shot.

[citation][nom]DAK_59[/nom]I don't see phones taking the place of desktops any time soon. Laptops might. I use a laptop at work with a dock and 2 monitors. Except for the fact that I can easily take it on trips, it might as well be a desktop.[/citation]
Show me a single laptop which can run Crysis @ 20 fps @ 1920*1080 @ Very High which costs USD 800, and I promise you, I will immediately burn my desktop and marry a laptop.

Bill Gates said the same thing while he was still with Microsoft. Only he was saying that Tablet PC's would be the new form factor of the masses. I laugh when I hear such comments no matter who utters them.

You guys just dont get it. The large screen and keyboard/mouse/input doesn't have to go away just because desktops will. Where we are headed and have been for some time is a world where everyone has a small hand held unit like a smart phone. You have a dock station at home/work/school where you can drop the device in and access it with a large monitor and input devices. Eventually we will get to where to be a citizen and interact with the world you will need such a device and will have it from the early school age on. It will be your personal computing device, but it will also be a communication device, your ID, your wallet, your keys, etc.

[citation][nom]Ryric[/nom]I love the constant Anti-desktop raving. For Design work, and any type of video work desktops will be preferred by most users (not necessary PC, but at least macs).I would prefer to see Consoles being obsolete in 3 years with home theaters being inter-connected with PC's.[/citation]

A mac is a PC = Personal Computer. The difference is the OS and only a bit of hardware difference. Just because you have Linux on your computer you don't have a linux you have PC.

And I'd just like to see software engineers writing code on a cell phone. Will it interface well with MQSeries and DB2? I mean for creating DB apps and services ?

I spend most of may day working with PC and I am not buying a laptop because i know that I'll be taking it with me everywhere i will go. It's enough that my mobile phone is always with me.

And yes, RAW power, can your laptop run at dual/quad 4ghz+ and still be portable?

Un huh at home I have three active desktops and one laptop, and at work the situation isn't much different except for the scale. There are 8 desktops, two serve as servers, there are 18 GE PLC computers (flashable rom based modules that have IO for industrial controls), perhaps 6 panels running windows CE, and -a- laptop in a pear tree. True to most businesses they are as old as possible , mission critical installations have no internet access and generally are out of date. This is a public utility BTW. Remote access is handled by old fashioned dial up with encryption and a password at either the local operators discretion or certain time slots. While laptops could replace the non serving computers, there’s no way that any wireless standard out there will be allowed to hook into the mission critical fiber network this utility runs on.

can you imagine having the power of your desktop in your cell phone... then hooking up your cellphone to a keyboard and mouse through bluetooth and to a HD TV just like your desktop??

all of you saying you will always need your desktop stop and realize that it wont take long for all that power to easily fit into something the size of your cellphone

granted the cost factor will be different... but that too changes over time and eventually older technology becomes more expensive than the newer

did you even read what i wrote?!?

by then you would be able to connect your phone to your monitor/tv, which i already stated in the last post

in the years to come with everything going mobile and getting smaller... its not hard to imagine the power of your current desktop easily being able to fit into the size of a cell phone... a cellphone that uyou could easily connect everything such as your keyboard/mouse/monitor wirelessly

I dont see this happening anytime soon, I have tons of hardware that will last me for quite some time, not replacing anything with anything.

And +1 Adam, I just got my copy of Win 7 a few months back and don't expect it to be upgraded to anything other than normal updating. To say that we will not be using desktops in the near future is like saying there wont be any gas powered cars in 3-5 years. It aint happening ..
