[citation][nom]hksduhksdu[/nom]The problem with openness is also the consistency of quality. [/citation]
Last time I checked apache, an open source product, was one of the most consistent web servers out there.

[citation][nom]Godfail[/nom]That's what kept me from buying iPods for years...but I've learned to live with it now. It's copy protection, at its worst. I wouldn't call it a "limitation" since it's done purposefully to maintain Apple's great relationship with its content providers.[/citation]
My point was not about the humiliating "restriction" itself, but about the fact that NOT A SINGLE REVIEW MENTIONS IT!!!

I don't think Open Source and Openness as was stated really apply to Apache, which is complicated by being both a platform and an application.

Well, they had to have mentioned it or I wouldn't have known to not buy it in the past. Or it's been so long with that behavior that reviewers assume you know the limitations of an iPod and how it ties to iTunes.

[citation][nom]Godfail[/nom].But about Apple being a niche market...it's not in the world of phones, it's not in the world of media players, it's not in the world of tablets...and hell, it's the dominating leader of all three right now.[/citation]
Dominating? :)))
1) There is no tablets market at the moment, and soon it will be saturated by a lot of products by lot of companies
2) So how many iphones were sold so far? Try to sales to Nokias 😉.
3) mp3 players - could be. With obviously underrated yet superior to ipads Sony Walkman (do they sell them in US?) I tend to agree.

"Ties to iTunes" means "you gotta use strange software that some guys manage to find exceptinal to upload your stuff". It doesn't mean "you can't get your stuff back from your device". Neither does it mean "you can't upload your stuff from both your notebook and PC". Heck, it doesn't even mean "folders aren't supported either".

I ment HTTP server, which is not "a platform" and is both open and open source.

1) Half a million iPads have been sold in just a few weeks and the 3G model isn't even out yet, the game of catchup that will have to be played by competitors is far too strong. And by the time they come along, the word iPad and tablet will be married to one another like Nintendo or Playstation in their respective eras.
2) over 20 million I believe. Over time, Nokia sold tons of phones but they're not even on the charts anymore. LG, Samsung, and RIM are all beating Nokia into the ground. When you think about iconic cell phones, Razr really knocked Nokia out of the running, and Apple has since taken that role. When you get down to it, the free phones will always be the "best selling" so I guess a piece of this is subjective...and with that said, the iPhone is only available on one carrier yet still the top seller.
3) I used to like the Creative Zen series. Some recent survey asked 1,000 teenagers what mp3 player they would buy and 100% of them said an iPod. That's true domination there.

It's a development platform as well as an application.

All very true but the behavior has been there for 7 years. Should it really be brought up in a review today?

I was wrong, there are 50 million iPhones sold so far.

[citation][nom]irh_1974[/nom]Seems like Democracy is in action on Tom's forumsSeems like BackByDemand's comments are getting thumbs up and yours are getting thumbs down.Just an observation...[/citation]

I just looked a the front page and see that even my post about Apple better standing by their products and repairing them is also thumbed down...I get the feeling that when people don't like something, true or not, they'll thumb it down as a way of saying "I don't want to believe that".

"I get the feeling that when people don't like something, true or not, they'll thumb it down as a way of saying "I don't want to believe that""

Congratulations! You've discovered the Internet!

I got a bunch thumbs down for saying that Apple's marketing may give them an insurmountable lead over Google.

LOL, well in this case, it's been suggested that what I'm saying is somehow wrong because people vote it down...when in fact, it's because it bothers them that I'm pointing something out that they can't actually articulate an argument to or simply cannot argue with.

[citation][nom]knowom[/nom]"How Google’s Tablet Can Challenge The iPad." It wouldn't take much the next Nintendo hand held could challenge the iPad.[/citation]

Interesting, that sounds like you've put a lot of thought into this...

1-2) half a million in a few weeks is a joke. Here are the numbers for SMARTPHONES 2008 4th quarter:
Nokia: directly - 15 million, via vendors - 60 million
Apple: directly - 4 million, via vendors - 11 million

So who's "dominating"? Yes, we have a TORRENT OF HYSTERIA surrounding any Apple product (Jobbs has good links I guess) but that's it.

3) Yes, which is very sad, since other companies have vastly superior products.

kartu,
I went to the link and I think you missed quoted the facts....if tou look above table 1,2 it says Thousands of Units. That being the case where did you get 15 mil for nokia?

Go Google! I really hope you triumph over Apple!
Given Steve's attitude, I am quite sick of Apple now because of him.
If iPad is so limited like the author of this article said, why do people still give their money to Apple and buy iPads?

So, what do you think 15,561.7 times one thousand is? :)))

[citation][nom]JohnnyLucky[/nom]Given the previous history of tablets and if it is a small niche market as some people suggest, then I don't think we're going to see a tablet frenzy.[/citation]
We are, since technology is ripe to bring us nice devices at a price reasonable for a semi-useless gadget.

Where on the Gartner's web page does it state 15 mil or multiply by 1000?

It's hard to believe that someone is asking such question seriously. Here it says "multiply by 1000":

(Thousands of Units)

Here is another review, for your theories, which should be multiplied by 10'000, it says "unites in ten tousands":
