Got a 970 gtx msi a few weeks ago, most games running at low fps

So around the 15th of december I got myself a new 970 gtx msi to replace my old amd GPU. Sicne then I've been getting major issues running alot of games. I got rainbow six siege with the new GPU and after about 15 minutes of play my fps will drop from anywhere around 100+ to 20 and below. On GTAV it goes down the 5 fps mark after about 10 minutes. I've tried upgrading my power supply to a 650w from a 450w and had no change, updated and cleaned all my drivers, made alot more space on my harddrive and even got my desk fan to sit infront of my computer to keep it cooler, it made a decent difference but eventually the same thing happened. I've had a look at my tempratures and they both hover around the 55-60 mark for both the GPU and CPU. Some help would really be appreactiated because I'm running out of ideas.
Specs as follows:

CPU
AMD FX-8120
Zambezi 32nm Technology (?)

RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 671MHz (9-9-9-24)

Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-970A-DS3 (Socket M2)

Graphics
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (MSI)

55-60C for your cpu? The max temp for that chip is 61C. If it is approaching or hitting that temp mark, the cpu will throttle itself to reduce heat. Remember by adding a more powerful video card, you also introduce increased heat into your case. What is the ambient temperature in the room? How is airflow in the case? How are the bios settings setup for voltage for the cpu? Some motherboards automatically increase voltage (more voltage = more heat) to automatically increase clock speed if they are set to AUTO. The fact performance improved by adding fans points to possibility of heat issues.

Other factors could be a poor quality psu. Which specific power supply are you using? Quantity of watts is not always true nor sufficient to decide on a quality power supply.

Corsair vs650 is the PSU. Think that might be the issue then since having the old GPU in didn't have these effects. Temprature in the room is usually pretty damn cold because i always have the window open, I'm a brit too so it's always cold or raining. Case is sort of enclosed in my desk but I have no more room to put it, and the gpu is sucking in air from the very bottom of the case so it's not really getting alot itself, but i can't afford to add anything or chagne things up right now :/. Any solutions that might help?

That's definitely thermal throttling. Your exact case if you know it would be helpful, but if you don't know can you just tell me if there is a rear fan and 1 or 2 front fans. You mentioned it was in a desk, does it have room to blow the hot air out of the back and take cooler air in the front?

That's what I'm working with, it's open in a oval shape at the back and has about two inches each side for the vents in the case at the side. One front fan at the bottom there, the fan with my powersupply is at the back at the very top, on the left side of the case at the very bottom is the GPU, sucking up air from the bottom of the case, seemly blowing it into the case rather than out, but I don't have anywhere else to put it :/. Can't find the case model.

CPU is too weak to drive that GPU. Even overclocked that CPU will hold you back on any titles where the game calls for it to kick in. Zambezi is terrible architecture.

While that's true now, in 2011 when it was released it was a fairly good CPU.

Fairly good? The Phenom X6 before it was a better CPU. Zambezi CPU's were never good to begin with. Under load that CPU consumes almost twice as much as a i5-2500K and gets destroyed in gaming and that's that even overclocking the Intel chip. Believe me or not but anyone that knows anything about CPU's knows that was a huge failure on AMD's part.

Everything for the CPU is stock, it's been fine running fallout 4, GTAV and Mass effect 3, might just be with the addition of the GPU :/

"Sicne then I've been getting major issues running alot of games." You did say this correct? Now you say its running fine and you think its the addition of the GPU? ok.

I mean, the addition of the GPU is what has been causing the problems. Since adding in the 970 I've been struggling to play anything beyond a game like AOE 3. With the old GPU I had (Which was also AMD but can't rememebr the name) everything was running fine and I nevver had any problems running Mass effect 3, GTA V and the likes.

OK I understand but at what frame rates was your old card running?

Not entirely sure what frames for alot of games because I didn't have a counter, but 160 average for league of legends max settings no shadows, 50-75 GTAV average sometimes dropping, mass effect ran smoothly at around 60ish. Sorry I can't be more help than that.

The placement of that case is not ideal. It is going to be pulling tons of dust from the carpet. It is also not going to be exhausting hot air very well being so close to a wall. Dust contributes to heat buildup. Anyway you can elevate the case maybe next to your monitor? I suspect it is going to be an inadequate airflow issue causing your cpu to throttle from heat buildup over time.

Seems weird that a 970 would cause sudden heating issues if you were running anything remotely powerful prior to it.

I cant see imgur atm but if your case is on the floor, or especially if its on carpet...smack yourself. Twice. Then fix it. Lots of tiny shit floats around down there.

Its also good not to have your case too close to a wall or in an enclosed space. You want it to breathe.

Have you cleaned your heatsink/blown it out with air?

You may just need a better case or case fans.

It's in an enclosed space in the desk and is about one inch above the carpet. Problem is I don't really have a solution to that unless I sit my computer ontop of my desk :/

I can try to see if everything reaches the plugs if i have it sitting on the desk, problem is a room issue. The room I have is pretty tiny and there isn't many more places it can really go that would improve it even slightly.

I have the 8320, which is basically the same thing. Just a little faster. I also have a Geforce GTX 750. I am able to play just about every game at at least 200-300 fps. (CSGO,Minecraft,Black ops 2,Payday 2) It could very well be a problem with either Direct X or Open GL. If you haven't already a factory reset on your rig may be your best bet if you don't want to un-mount your cpu cooler.

Could do, the computer will be coming up to 3 years old in like june time

It's throttling when it just goes on 61C. Having a fan next to my computer pointed at the CPU is letting me run the games I want to play.

Like turkey said there is no throttling at that temp. CPU's and GPU's are made to go into the 90's before they shut down or throttle. I wonder at what point you will take my previous advice and realize that CPU is weak for gaming.

But it has been completely fine before? I just don't understand why adding in this GPU is suddenly making it run like this.
