Got a dead pcie x16 slot on my asus z79 A mobo, any possible reasons why?

Got a dead pcie x16 slot on my 6 month old asus z97 A mobo. Currently running two gtx 970's and now i have a new mobo to replace the asus z97 A and system is running fine. I dont overclock my gpus and use a rather reliable corsair ax750 as my psu. Also, i never tampered with the inside of my system until the pcie slot died, so i doubt it was due to me physically damaging it. does any one have any possible reasons why my asus mobo would have a dead pcie slot so quickly?
