Hi,
So I don't now where to begin really.
I hired someone online to help me with my computer issues. He felt it was a HD issue & that I should get a new one. The other one was from 2013.
I bought an SSD which I got a computer store local to me to put in. That was back on July 22nd.
This techie then installed Window 7, but I had issues even then. At first it started to install, then something happened that I don't remember, & it wouldn't read the CD.
He burned an image onto a stick & we got Windows loaded that way.
That was just the start of 3 weeks of a nightmare & me spending hours every day helping him since he's remote & I'm here in front of the computer.
Almost every driver he installed caused Windows to get stuck at the Windows logo when restarting.
We couldn't even get restore points to work most of the time & when they did work, Win told us they didn't work.
Repairing worked only once or twice if memory serves me.
The last driver to be installed that was causing issues was my Brother printer, so we left that for a while & on a forum he goes to for help they told him to test my memory.
It gave us errors, but when we went to test 2 sticks (I had 4 sticks installed) at a time & then each of the 2 4 GB sticks individually, there were no errors.
We didn't run it for the full 48 minutes because we'd see errors after about 10 mins., but even today we ran the one 8 GB stick to 100% & it's fine.
Unfortunately while I was changing sticks around I smelled a burning smell & we figured out that slot 3 doesn't work which is why I can't use all 4 sticks now.
I don't know if that's because I tried to start the computer without pushing it down 100% (just once this happened) or what.
After that, either the computer beeped or I got a black screen. It would ONLY start up with the one stick in it.
So I went from having 24 GB of RAM to only 8. 🙁 I can barely do my work now.
I'm about to order a new MB, but it will take a while to get to me. I'm overseas, so everything has to be shipped twice.
The new SSD was dropped on the floor by the idiot who installed it into my case, but it was still in the box & he booted up the computer with no issues once it was installed, although it was booting up from the HD I was using at the time, so that doesn't really prove much.
A day or two later the guy helping me did find 2 sectors that were bad, but the HD self corrected.
Today he tried again to install the Brother Printer driver & he got it installed, I even did a test print which WORKED & even the reboot worked.
When we rebooted, that's when he did a Windows 7 update & once AGAIN we couldn't get back into the computer & I lost another 3 1/2 hours of my life.
Everything he tried last time that worked didn't work this time & I was at my wits end. I couldn't even eat my dinner.
The ONLY thing that worked at the end that he had tried once before was changing or removing the drivers for the 3.0 USB ports in the back of the computer. He uninstalled them & now I have my computer back.
Please, if you have ANY ideas as to what is going on & how to help me, it would be much appreciated.
I don't know if I should hire someone else or what.
He's been working really hard at this for me, He seems smart about some things, but then not so smart about others. I can tell he has been doing this a lot for a long time & he makes every effort to find the answer online when he doesn't know what's going on, but this has been a nightmare for the both of us.
I asked him several times tonight WHY he didn't reinstall Windows like he said he wanted to weeks ago, so tomorrow he's going to reinstall Windows on top of Windows.
Also I had someone else turn off Windows update because I thought he had turned updates off, but Windows keeps installing updates WITHOUT my permission. 2-3 times now over the last 2 weeks I've woken up & my computer has restarted on its own.
Everything seems to ALWAYS cause a problem when an update is done.
Thank you very much & have a lovely day.
