I'm looking to get a new 1440p ultrawide monitor for my set-up and an upgraded GPU to power it.
Not willing to shovel out massive amounts of money for Nvidias top range rtx cards so got my eye set on the Thicc III ultra RX5700xt, similar performance to the Red Devil but around £50 cheaper as of right now.

Was wondering if however the 5700xt is still a bit underpowered for 1440p ultrawide? Would it possibly be better to wait until Nvidias new GPU's come out around october around the same price bracket.

Also may be of importance:
The monitor i'm eyeing is the AOC CU34G2X due to its great value. It is a free-sync monitor, but is (uncertified) g-sync compatible with some people having small issues but a potential firmware update to fix this may come about in the future.
Would this be a reason to keep away from Nvidia?
I don't see myself choosing a different monitor as the only similarly specced g-sync monitors I can find are £200-300 more.

That aoc monitor is awesome IF it's in stock. I have been looking at it for 6months, finally ordered and got it. And it was destroyed, super bummed. But I did get a chance to run a few benchmarks before boxing it back up to return. And imo the 5700xt may be a little weak for max settings, but if you're willing to turn them down, you should be fine. My tests were with a 2080, and I tested only 3 games. Was going to test more but was just too upset about the damage.

Rdr2 lost about 20fps vs 2560x1440. Averaging around 65-70 instead of 80+. Not max settings either, settings from an optimization guide by hardwareunboxed.

RE2 lost about 25-30, but was still close to 100.

Doom 2016 was the last, and it still ran at near enough 200...
This all depends what you current monitor is. I will tell you my experience. I currently have a 165hz 1440p monitor and wanted to up my experience. I bought 3440x1440p that was 120hz. It was cool but the lower refresh rate was a massive deal breaker unless i was willing to drop $2000 on 200hz which wasnt going to happen.
To answer you question I think the 5700xt would work depends on what you are expecting. What games you play is also a factor. I wouldnt touch anything in the monitor department Asus , Acer and HP(only on sale )

Current monitor is another AOC 1440p but its 16:9 and 60hz about 3 years old now. The ultrawide I mentioned is 144hz so going to be an upgrade all round.

I don't often play AAA games, especially competive multiplayer ones such as Battlefield, but I do like ones like the metro and assassins creed series. Looking to pick up Borderlands 3 soon aswell. Hoping to get at least 100+ frames even if that means turning down the settings somewhat, to get the most out of the higher refresh rate.

What do you mean you wouldnt touch anything in the monitor department?

Doom 2016 was the last, and it still ran at near enough 200 solid. But that game runs on anything.

So with a 5700xt you could expect slightly less performance. I dont see you having any issue running close to over 60fps in most newer titles. Older games should do much better. I wish I could have done more testing. I had to send it back and unfortunately no more stock unless I want to pay 2x what I originally paid.

Yeah I pre-ordered it over a month ago from OverclockerUK for only £450 who said it wouldn't take long but theres no exact due date because of the virus situation with the supplier. Now theyre saying they havent had an update from the supplier for months and asking me if I want to cancel my order. Not in stock anywhere else for a reasonable price either. I imagine we wont see a lot of things in stock until the worst of the pandemic is over so I think that's made my decision for me. No point upgrading my GPU if I'm not getting the monitor any time soon.

Thanks for the numbers though, by the looks of them I think it'd probably be best for me to have waited anyway to get the most out of that 144hz refresh rate.

Also, just out of curiosity, did you have a look at the g-sync compatibility of the monitor while you were using it? I’ve heard there were some issues in some models but apparently a firmware update may fix these. Haven’t seen a anything on the matter less than 4 months old so wondering if you experienced any issue in the short time you had it? I’ve never used FreeSync or g-sync myself but am under the impression it’s important enough to be a deal breaker for some.

I never got that far into the settings. Total run time was maybe 20 minutes, just long enough to see if it was going to be a huge drop in games. From what I've read in reviews, gsync works fine. But cannot verify.

It was hard enough for me to run the few benchmarks I did knowing it was going back after waiting so long for it. Left upper corner was broken inside the screen as well as a huge crack about 1/3-1/2 way across the screen. All internal damage, so if you do receive it, hook it up and test it first. From the outside visual inspection it looked in perfect shape.
