GPU Caught fire? GTX 1080

Hello there, something strange and quite unexpected happened yesterday. I turned on my PC and noticed a strange burning smell and flames being erupted from what I thought was my GTX 1080.

I took it to my local tech guy to check if my cpu and my motherboard were fried and it turns out that my motherboard was the only component that wasn't working. I took my parts back home to hook everything up to my old motherboard which I had laying around to see if my GPU was still in working condition and to my surprise it was.

My question is what do you think caused this fire?

Can it be from the GPU that ruined my MB or was it my PSU that did it? any help would be greatly appreciated. There were no previous problems that would've lead me to think that such a thing would happen, no boot up problems no crashes nothing.

MB - MSI Z270 Gaming PRO

CPU i7 7700k

GPU GTX 1080 FTW (EVGA)

PSU Corsair CX 750

I'd like to also add that nothing was overclocked if that makes any difference.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post. :)

Solution
If the GPU still works then my money is a psu failure. Is that psu the one with the green CX on the label or the newer grey one? The old green ones were poor quality.
I've had a failing ps take out a motherboard and everything on it before. It was an Enermax Liberty 620w that did this deed and while they were nice about replacing it with a revised model I was still out of pocket for the components.

Trap, that's from the old poor quality range with the green CX.

Poor quality is a bit harsh, they werent that bad. And not known for breaking components.

If it was the PSU failing I would have expected more than the GPU to be broken.

Just checked and couldnt find anything, I just remember the flame was next to my GPU where the PCIE slot is.

The GPU is working fine at the moment in an older I build that I installed it in, how ever I'll probably turn it off because im using the same PSU >_>

The old green CX used poor quality parts and had minimal safety features. The old psu tier list which has now been removed as it’s out of date had the CX range as tier 4 which was 1 up from the worst and in the section of do not use form gaming pc’s. This thread is just one of many showing their poor quality and failures. The only one that came out slightly better was the CX430.

This hasnt proved it was the PSU, and they really were not as bad as your making out, plus the tier list was a joke.

Its not the best PSU by any means, but its not one know for blowing up stuff or being dangerous..

Sure, ive used at least 5 or so in builds that are still working to this day. All PSU models will have failures.

Like I said, not saying they are amazing, but they are far from the real poor quality units.

Get the RM750x if you haven't yet. That thing's rock solid, it'll last you forever. Comes with a 10yr warranty too.
