GPU choice: 290x or GTX780/680?

I'm just about to undergo my first proper build and as a newcomer to this kind of thing I was interested as to what you guys would recommend with regard to GPUs, for a little bit of gaming but mostly some photoshop and rendering work. I'm currently looking at getting this 290x or a similar 290

I was wondering would you guys recommend something like that or do you think that an nvidia equivalent, something like a GTX 780 or 680, would be better?

I've also heard some unsettling things regarding some AMD cards in comparison to nvidia, have any of you ever had any significant problems with either?

I'll be playing mostly games that arent hugely GPU intensive, but some others like the Metro redux games, BF4, Far Cry, the Bioshock franchise, the Witcher games etc. And my budget would be around £350/$550.
