I currently have an r9 270 for my PC, and I am looking to upgrade. I was looking at getting a gtx 970, but I am unsure if it is compatible. If not, what is a good alternative with a similar price?
The 'requirements' to be compatible, are the same for a 270 and a 970 (x16 PCIe slot etc) .... Although I believe most 970s require 2x 6pin connectors whereas a typical 270 needs 1x 8pin.
Which CPU do you have to pair it with? And what PSU?
Not worth what SG? We don't know prices etc.
A 970, for the right price (and with hardware that'll pair nicely with it) is a perfectly viable card on the used market....

I’m unsure as to what PSU I have, I think it’s 750 watts. My CPU is an i5 7600k. The interface of my current gpu is PCI-Express x16 if that helps.
The 970 is old and not worth it right now unless you want to get it used and find a good deal. Full PC specs(including PSU)?

You'd need to look at it and confirm the model etc, before I'd be comfortable saying outright "you'll be fine" BUT, a decent 750W PSU should be sufficient and have the appropriate connectors etc (if it doesn't, it's a very poor PSU!).
