Hey everyone,

I'm facing a dilemma. I just ordered an awesome 34'' 1440p monitor and I'm super excited about it. I did not plan on gaming on 1440p since I knew my notebook is a bit old and my GPU could not handle it, but it turns it might not handle it at all (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-480m/specifications). I've got a clevo x7200 with a single 480m and possibility of SLI. Am I right in assuming it won't handle the resolution?

I'm gathering money for a new gaming notebook and can't replace this one right now, so I'm looking to do the best thing for my situation... either replace my GPU for the best possible one or try to find another 480m to have it in SLI.

Which is my best option? Can you help me figure out the best GPU my mobo could handle? I don't know how to do that and with this notebook it seems particularly hard to find this information.

I've got Everest installed, so I guess I can provide any needed information. I know my GPU is a PCI-E 2.0 and I know my power supply can handle 2 of my GPU's so it should handle a higher GPU, too, I guess. How can I go about this?

Thanks for any tips,
Henry

Erm you can't actually upgrade GPUs on most laptops and definitely can't add a second GPU in SLI in a laptop that doesn't already have SLI setup. But this graphics card you mentioned actually does support your 1440p monitor. In fact, it supports a tad bit higher at 1600p (16:10 ratio). You just need to use the HDMI port on your laptop.

But let's assume you can, maybe your specific laptop somehow supports SLI. No, the card wouldn't support a higher resolution just because you add two.

Aha, good news! At least it will support my new monitor. But you do make sense. The reason why I'm asking about an update is because this laptop is supposed to be highly upgradable, it's one of the reasons why I bought it. For instance, I can update its ram and hard drives easily. I know GPU's are a different story, but since I know this laptop was also available with an SLI setup I assumed mine could also support it. Now that you mention it, it's possible my mobo is not SLI ready, though. When I open Everest, under GPU it says "SLI status" disabled. Does that mean it can be enabled perhaps?

But leaving the SLI behind, do you have a clue about how I could check which newer GPU I could replace mine with?

Okay, so... you're right, it does support 1600p like you mentioned. However... one tiny but meaningful detail that I forgot to mention is that the monitor's resolution is 3440x1440... and I noticed on the website it says the GPU only goes up to 2560... does that mean that I actually wouldn't be able to run my monitor at it's native resolution?
