GPU and CPU utilization in GTAV

All below according to MSI afterburner:

I have a I7 930 @ 4.0Ghz, under load runs at 70-75 degC

In GTA V it seem be running at around 75% utilization for all the cores.

Just bought an EVGA GTX980 4gb superclock running at 50% - 55% utilization and also around 70degC, I have the fans set at 75%

In terms of the graphics, I have everything set to max, accept for MSAA x2 and grass Very High not Ultra, also the when flying stream high quality assets, I have not changed any of the other advance graphics options. Been testing using the built in benchmark in GTA V

The game is running of a 240gb SSD and I have 12GB of RAM currently set at 1100mhz, it is Gskill 1600, but the auto overclock utility in my bios has set it at that level, I have yet had a play to see if the memory speeds would make any difference.

Anyway the question is does anyone have any ideas why the system is being under utilized and yet I am not holding a steady 60fps with Vsync on.

Vsync off i go all the way from 35fps up to 95fps depending on the scene, the lowest dips in fps are the final explosion at the end of the bench marker.

Vsync on or off, utilization does not change a bit.

In Nvidia graphics properties I have set the master 3D setting to use the application settings, which should nullify all the other setting in their related to ambient occulsion, DSR, FXAA etc etc.

I am concerned I am hitting some kind of thermal limit for the graphics card? Or its stuck in some power saving mode?

Previously I was using 2xGTX460 they were maxed out, 100% utilization, but I could get a stable 30fps or 60fps, with the correct settings.

Thoughts?

You have an older cpu, go to the advanced tab and start turning off stuff until you get closer to your fps goals.

Its still a very capable CPU, especially overclocked and it is not being used 100% or even close as stated above, and neither is the GPU. So turning stuff off until a locked 60 is found doesnt seem like a solution.

It's because the CPU utilization in the game isn't that great. I'm going to go out on a limb & guess that the FPS drops either happen a) when you get into the city, b) when you're driving, or c) both...which is what everyone else is also seeing. Even players with i7-4790/GTX 970 combos are seeing noticeable FPS drops in those situations.

So yes, your CPU is still a very capable one...it's just that GTA V is not very well optimized for PC hardware yet. So try experimenting & taking the non-grass settings down from max to very high, then fiddle with the other settings until you can get 60FPS minimum in all situations.

HI, thank you for your kind suggestions, but I think i have the problem licked.

Seems my Ram was badly underclocked, and the uncore ratio was wrong and set very low. I hadn't noticed so I was probably getting a bottle neck there, set RAM properly to correct values i.e. 1600 and also the uncore is now at a 8:9 ratio with CPU speed.

Also my CPU was getting very hot, 100deg C, so removed heat sink cleaned it, added new thermal paste, and redirected the main fan and exhaust fan, back down to 75deg C under load, so probably was a bois related thermal limit.

CPU usage is now peaking at 81%, GPU 95+%, ran the benchmark, there were no dips to 35, lowest was 45ish during lots of partical explosions, max was 100+fps.

So will disable MSAA and I guess that will be a 60 lock.

peace.
