Question GPU crash in games, but only sometimes.

Hi everyone,

In some games my gpu randomly crashes but not always. It isnt always the same length of time either that it takes. This happens in Overwatch, Destiny 2, Monster Hunter World, just about every game. Some take longer than others.

My setup is actually an alienware alpha r2 which has 16 gb of ram and a i76700t that is hooked up to an alienware graphics amp housing a gigabyte aorus gtx 1080 ti 11gb.

Now i have actually solved the issue by using nvidia control panel to do debug mode. As i understand it, this just makes the card not self overclock on its own and run at base.

Im not knowledgeable enough to be sure what the cause is but i did use after burner to lower the power percent to 77 and it seemed to stop. Some games i can push it. For example in MH worlds case and in OW case i can seem to do 99 percent or around there. Destiny 2 doesnt seem to like any settings.

As far as i can tell, my temps are never reaching abnormal levels on benchmarks. Everything seems normal. Also for reference even with default msi settings if i hit the test button just the amplifier shuts down after a bit and i have to reboot. Those tests only run well for a bit.

Any and all info would help.

Okay. I have yet to reinstall drivers.
though as an update:
A stronger fan curve and switching to the aorus xtreme software to go with the aorus card has fixed the issue for mhworld and OW. I tested both for several hours with zero issues at 100 percent as my target power. Destiny 2 in particular ran for a good hour or 2 with no issues before finally crashing. When this crash happened there was no defining reason i could find. Gpu was off and on max load several times. Power maxed out a few times. When the crash happened neither were at 100. Fan wasnt maxed out and temps were not out of 50s. Perhaps drivers are the issue. Unfortunately I had to go to work but I will try the drivers and report back. ( For reference When i swapped from my 960 to to my 1080 ti i never did any driver wipes or anything i just let GeForce Experience install the drivers)

So as an update. I did two things
I did the ddu with a clean install and then for good measure I changed the TDR from 2 to 10 with tdr manipulator.

I played multiple games today before work and i had a single moment where things stuttered on the beginning on destiny and that was it.

I appreciate the help tshinhar!
