GPU for my new build

I was looking to upgrade my current GPU 650 Ti 2gb to a better card that will increase my fps with a LED 1080p monitor. My budget is around $200-$300.

My pc:

Processor - Intel i5 4690k 3.5 GHz quad core
Ram - 8Gb gskill ripjaw x series ddr3
Mobo - asus z97-a

Currently I can play games like H1Z1 on high at 45fps and Warlords of Draenor on high 40-50fps. I would like to reach 60fps on high or 40-50fps on ultra. Still new to this pc building thing help would be greatly appreciated!

In that price range I would grab a gtx 960, or save a bit more and get a gtx 970

Any specific brand I should stick with? I was reading reviews on newegg on the 970 and some guy said that asus told him the z97 mobo wouldn't work with that card so it got me worried. PC part picker says it will tho.

I don't know who told you that but thats not right. gtx 970 should work on any motherboard with pci-e slot.

cant really speak from experience on the games in particular, but i do have a 770 SC 2GB, and it handles what ever i should through it. so i would suggest looking at the 760-770 GPU's to start with.

what about the r9 290x if he has a sufficient PSU? it's as good as the gtx 970 performance wise

i cant say, i haven't messed with AMD cards in years.

Asus 970 Strix is pretty damn good.

but the gtx 970 doesnt fit in the budget. the gtx 960 isnt realy good. so depending ont he PSU it's either a gtx 770, r9 290x or r9 280x
