Hi all
Im not up to date on the latest GPU v Mboard tech so was wondering what GPU to get for my sons Rog Strix Z690-E Mboard. Ive no idea the difference between the 30 or 40 series GPU's but he wants an upgrade from his nvidia gtx 1080.
Can anyone recommend something in the £5 -600 bracket please.

Thanks
Jimmy

Make and model of your case? Processor you've paired with the motherboard in your thread's title? Make and model of your PSU and it's age(if it's been in service)?

On second thought, pass on your son's build specs like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Here's a shortlist;

but we could fine tune what's a good choice if we knew more about the system it'll be dropped into.

What is your budget and where are you located in the world and any ideas where you are planning to shop?

Personally I’ve got a similar pc but with the V i5 12600kf. In my option to get a meaningful upgrade you are going to be at least in the $500 dollar range though you may catch a sale. For example a week or two ago I bought an amd rx 6800xt from Newegg.com for $439. To really get a meaningful upgrade for him I would look at the rx 6800xt, 7800xt, or the rtx 4070. Or something higher than those. However once you get bigger than that then you are looking at 600 dollars or more.

Let us know a ballpark of what you want to spend and what resolution your son is playing at and we should be able to better help you find what you’re wanting. Also if you go through Newegg they’ve been advertising a trade in program where you pick trade in during checkout and essentially mail your old card in once you get the new one and if the old one is in good shape that you can get credit for it.

Not much reason to upgrade in my opinion if he’s at 1080p.

When I went to a 1440p monitor a year or two ago from 1080p that felt like a huge upgrade. Just seemed like you could see more details etc. I think if you went with one of the cards above and a budget 1440p monitor with at least 144hz and freesync, that should give a nice update that he could see.

No there are certainly games that a GTX1080 will struggle with, even at 1080p. The latest titles like Starfield for example. Still that doesn't mean they are unplayable.

GTX1080 8GB is roughly equivalent to the entry level RX6600 8GB which is often sub-$200.

If you want an upgrade, but don't want to spend a whole lot. RTX3060 is a good compromise.

Somewhere in between would be the AMD RX6800 or 6800XT, quite powerful for the money, but they aren't as good at ray tracing as Nvidia cards.

If you want to spend the full 600, an RTX4070 is roughly equivalent to an RTX 3080Ti and uses a lot less power.

Couple generations apart is an ideal upgrade. 3060 is below 1080Ti and wouldn't consider it from a 1080. 4070Ti is where that double the performance is at currently if 3080Ti is hard to come by.

Imho, Amd show the numbers and are more reasonably priced, however Nvidia is more reliable.

I would not recommend a 3080Ti even with an RM850x, and I have both. Also, yeah, not sure where you would get one for under 600. Just too power hungry as well. The GTX1080 was quite efficient needing only a single 8-pin power connector for a reference model.

RTX4070 at 200W is pretty good compared to the 180W reference GTX1080.

Older review, puts the 4070 above the 3080Ti on average at 1080p.

RTX 3060 review, doesn't have the GTX1080, but does have the RX6800 XT for comparison.

Was referring 3080Ti as a performance point where to start from if upgrading from 1080. That's why i linked Techpowerup for it's relative performance list for ease of understanding where newer graphics cards are at now. When upgrading should look at least double the performance. 3080Ti is a good reference point compared to what they have now.

I have an Rm850x too btw, been running 3080Ti extensively for little over two years now. Concern is a little exaggerated if you were getting at something else transient spike related. Not sure why you mentioned that.

I agree with the the concept of waiting until you can double performance, and I see now why you phrased it that way.

The power is not a concern, but a preference. It runs absolutely fine. Just consumes a lot of power.

If they are used to a GTX1080, and switch to an RTX 3080Ti or something close to the 350W mark, it will be noticeable. It can certainly heat a room up quickly. It doesn't matter, there are none available outside the used market.

If you can get a good deal on a 6800xt or 7800xt that’s the way I’d probably go. Roughly equivalent to a 4070 except for ray tracing. If you catch it on sale the 6800xt might be a good buy because it’s a last generation card now even though the performance is still good.
