Hello,

I'm currently building my new system (with all new parts), and I'm bench testing my parts, no OS installed yet. When installing my GPU into Slot 1 on the board, the BIOS isn't able to detect the GPU. I updated the BIOS to the most recent version as well, issue still remains. I install the GPU into Slot 2; it displays the BIOS just fine (running at x4).

Okay, so I start troubleshooting to narrow down the issue. I actually had an ASUS Strix Z690-E first (had the same issue) but I exchanged it for the Z790-E today (due to this issue, and it seemed like it was used). So, two different ASUS boards are having this issue. I also put the new 4080 GPU into my old system, and it boots up just fine. So just in case, I moved over my old PSU to my new system just to test, issue remains. I also installed my old Gigabyte GTX 970 GPU into my new system in Slot 1, BIOS detects and displays just fine. So, it seems like I ruled out the GPU, MOBO, and PSU. I find it weird that my old GPU works in Slot 1. Maybe my CPU is faulty? My old motherboard slot is a PCIe 3.0 x16 (where my new 4080 worked).

When I install the 4080 into Slot 1, the fans do spin on system startup, and the RBG lights remain on. I used the 3-cord adapter that came with the card, and I purchased the Corsair GPU cable adapter as well. Both have the same result.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Motherboard: ASUS Strix Z790-E
CPU: i7-13700K
GPU: Gigabyte 4080 Gaming OC
PSU: Corsair RM1000X
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 2x16GB 6400 (Model: F5-6400J3239G16GX2-TZ5RK)

Are you using a pcie riser?

If not, then check cpu socket for bent/broken pins.
I am not using a riser card. Card is installed directly on the board. CPU socket appears to be good shape (I also checked when I had the original Z690z board as well) . Also checked the PCIe slot too. That looks clean (as it probably should on a brand new board).

BIOS version for your motherboard? Did you clear the CMOS after verifying that the BIOS was flashed to the latest version?
Current version is the latest one on the Asus website (ver. 1501). Board came with ver. 0803. Issue was occurring before and after the update.

As your suggestion, I did try clearing the CMOS, but no change.

I was thinking CPU was faulty, but I find it weird that my old GTX 970 card is detectable in Slot 1.

Update:

I went to my local computer repair shop and had them change out the CPU to test to see if that was causing the issue. They didn't have a i7-13700K (or any other 13th Gen CPU), but they did install a 12th Gen CPU (I do not know which model though). Anyways, once the CPU was changed out, the GPU was able to display a picture in Slot 1. I 'm in the process of exchanging my i7-13700K from Newegg. I will update this thread once I receive the CPU and give it a go.

I'm hoping it's not a board issue with 13th Gen CPU's. Guess we'll see.
