Gpu Overclocking Issues

So I decided to overclock my laptop's gpu (nvidia gtx 970m) the other day and I only brought the memory up by 20mhz and the core clock up by 30mhz using evga precisionx. Everything was stable and there was a noticeable increase in performance. BUT, Hwmonitor said my gpu core clock was only 540 mhz when heaven 4.0 (the benchmark I was using) clearly said it was at around 1083 (can't remember the exact number). So which one is right? Also another guy on youtube with the exact same laptop (sager np8651/clevo p650se) could overclock about +500mhz core clock and I think +544mhz memory clock no problem and I started losing performance at +50mhz core clock and + 99mhz memory. I set all the values to default now just to be safe.

when u looked at 540mz was that while u were in test or at idle?
my gpu and memory clock is variable and runs at min with no activity and it jumps accordingly to ur activity

It is at the exact same time as when I was benchmarking.

ok i understand what ur saying. obviously one is wrong so lets just put that aside and figure out what ur score is with default settings. so both of them should show 540. then compare that score with attemped oc score.. if they are the same then hwmonitor is correct. if not the hwmonitor is not reading right. now the difference between score is gonna be small but it should be noticable. thats all i got bro. or u can dl other apps that read gpu or gpu tests. i use 3dmark06 and performance test by passmark. i find 3dmark more graphic intensive than passmark
