Gpu spinning but no display.

Yesterday made my new computer my mobo is msi x99a sli plus, Cpu is i7 5820k and gpu is 970. I installed the gpu into the first pcie slot and my gpu fans were spinning but no display on my monitor. I then installed the gpu in the second pcie slot and it worked display showed but even though its a x16 pcie slot its running at x8 so i dont like it. So is there any way i can fix this problem?

Are you connecting the monitor to the motherboard or to the video card?

Are you connecting the monitor to the motherboard or to the video card?

Mobo doesnt have a connecter for video on it so gpu
