GPU temps reaching 100C

Hi, I seemed to have hit a problem after cleaning out my computer today. I bought an aftermarket cooler for my CPU, and re-applied the thermal paste.

After doing so, I wanted to do the same to my GPU. It is a AMD RADEON HD 6970. I have Windows 10, and have the latest AMD drivers.

I was trying to play FIFA 15 earlier, but every time the temps reach 102C, according to both Speccy and the Catalyst Control Center.

On idle, temps range from 49C-55C. What could be causing this? Thank you.

Which aftermarket cooler did you install and where did you install it? I was curious if it was an AIO water cooler and if you happen to install the radiator in the front of the case. Would you mind posting your full specs, including your case and PSU? I'm trying to get an idea if this is an ITX case or full ATX. 102C is insane, especially on a game like FIFA 15. Did you make any alteration to your 6970 that proceed this temperature problem?

For my CPU, I installed the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 CPU cooler. For the thermal paste I used, it was an Arctic Silver brand.

According to a review I found (http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_6950_6970_review,12.html), the below temps are what they saw in testing your card model:

38 C idle
80 C load

Just as a test, could you temporarily leave you case open and lay it on it's side (motherboard facing up toward the ceiling). At idle and under load, what are the temps now? I'm just trying to figure out if there is something inherently wrong with the card, or the solution is as simply as adjusting the fan curve of your GPU, case fans, or simply enhancing your case's air flow.
