Question GPU Upgrade, 1070 or 2060?

I plan on upgrading my GPU soon to get more in-line with the current demand from video games. I have a 970, but I am not sure if I should get the 1070 or 2060.
Both of them are in my price range, I don't want to spend more then $500 and I would like to stay out of $400 range.
From what I was reading is that the 2k series of cards are more in-line with higher resolution gaming, I plan on staying at 1080p for quite some time, should I even be looking at the 2060 then?
Also the monitor I have, has a refresh rate of 144, I don't know if that may play a part in the cards I am looking at or not.

Is a huge jump from a 970 to a 1070, but if you got the budget/money, go for the must powerful and future proof: the 2060, and is US$350 with two free games.

The RTX2060 is about 20% better than the GTX1070 according to benchmarks, as the latter is the card it is meant to replace.
The gtx1070 has an extra 2gb of vram, but I don't think you are going to run out of vram before you run out of performance.
For 1080p 144hz, you will need as much performance as you can get, and vram won't be an issue at that resolution.
Thus, if the RTX2060 is within your price range, definitely grab that, as it is newer, better and supports ray-tracing.

Thanks for the impute, I will be purchasing the 2060 then.
Now that I am looking at the 2060 though, I notice is has a couple of different versions for the gigabyte one, the OC for 379, the OC Pro for 389, and the AORUS X for 399. Spec wise I can only tell that there is barely any difference unless I am missing something.
