hi all,

I have just built a pc for my 11 year old out of some old parts + a new mobo/cpu combo. Its a modest 1400 dollar build but most parts were from items left over as i upgraded my build. its your typical i7 16gb ram intel build with no gpu.

Long story short im trying to figure out if now is a good time to pass on my gpu, the r9 fury, to her, and get the rtx 2080, or the current amd offering. I don't want upgrade now if there is something big coming out in 3-6 months, but ive been out of the GPU market for a while and have just started research on the current generation. Mostly i know i want to have something with ray tracing, and i plan to either get 3 gsync/freesync 1440p monitors, or a 34" ultrawide. I would like to have a oled monitor if possible with good hdr capabilities once one is on the market. I am in a bid debate with myself now on which i will like better

my daughter is complaining because the on board gpu graphics cant run her games even at 1080p. I know she needs a gpu in it but i'd much rather give her my old one and get me a nice shiny new one that can push the above monitors. I have my eyes currently on a rtx 2080ti but dont want to buy one and find out in 3 months a better amd or better nvidia card comes out.

I have a budget of 3k for the card/s, and monitor/s
rig will be used for gaming, and running multiple vm environments for lab simulations for my work field. I also will be doing some video editing to make online training videos, and gaming videos

My rig currently is as follows
asus 28" 1440p 144hz ips freesync monitor
r9 fury
32gb of ram
1200 watt evga psu

I would not pass on the fury to her. It is very power-hungry and runs extremely hot, and we do not know her PSU. Not to mention it is much less efficient than newer cards. If you can get a second hand 1060 or even 1660 (ti or super) for her, she should be fine for 1080p (of course depending on the games she plays).

As for you, 2080Ti is a good choice. Nvidia is rumored to drop news on the RTX 3000 series very soon. However, the release of the RTX 3000 is not expected until Q4 2020 in part due to COVID 19, but also it seems they want to see the performance of AMD's RDNA 2's architecture. It really is up to you; do you want to wait till they release to pick one up or take a 2080Ti now and run your system.

So your total including the card for your daughter, yourself and your 3 new monitors would between $2414.95 to $2651.98. This price can be further driven down if you keep your current monitor and just 2 more identical ones.

The pc i gave her has a evga 800 watt psu i actuall used it with my card for a while but i had power issues when i went to 32gb of ram.

I spent a while researching last night and came across some discussions on a lv 38" thats out now, and a oled cx 48" that should be great pretty nice. I have a oled 65"C16. ( Last year for 3d)

I think from my research my best bet is to wait until a hdmi 2.1, and a dp2.0 card is on the market. I also want to find out if that cx 48 may have some options to split screen the inputs so it would be productive, and not just a pretty gaming monitor. If that screen has issues or is not vood for productivity i think ill go with the 38" since it supports spliting the inputs like a dual monitor. If my current monitor support gsync i would just by 2 more. Its great but no hdr or gysunc. Only freesync

I think ill look into a 1660 ti for her.
