Just wanting to get opinions on a GPU upgrade from the folks here
First - I'm an occasional gamer now. This happens when you get old 🙁 A family, my own business etc keep me from playing much at all anymore. I built a great machine last year, but used an old video card that I had in a closet as I had ZERO time to game at that time (gt710)
I get ready to buy a card several months ago but the prices are so inflated right now due to cryptomining so I put if off or I proably would have just grabbed a 480 or 580
Now, the 1070TI launch and the ability to pre order at MSRP has got me thinking about pulling the trigger. Before I do, I wanted to make sure I'm not going to do something stupid.
First : MY SYSTEM
intel 6800K
MB: Asus x99 A II
Ram 32g of DDR4
Power EVGA SuperNOVA 750 gold
Monitor Samsung S32D850T (32 inch 2k display)
I use this machine for my business and as a family plex server
When I play games, I typically play stuff like Civ, used to be hardcore wow but never again, RPG's, occasional shooters, eve
I dont see myself upgrading to a 4k monitor soon as I would want at least a 32" if not bigger. However, VR excites me and my 13 y/o son would love it but a VR equipment purchase is a year away probably.
I want great performance at 2k with most everything maxed. I would like the opportunity to use this card for VR maybe in the future.
With the 1070TI available for pre order at 450-490 USD I'm tempted to pull the trigger. However, thats only about 50 less that I could get a 1080 for. While I dont NEED the 1080 since I have a 2k monitor, is it worth 'future proofing' to go ahead and grab that instead? Or, is the TI more than I need and grab a 1070 for 425?
Or will the prices on non TI 1070's drop in december? Should I bite the bullet and wait on black friday sales?
Should I even buy a 1070 or 1080, or should I just grab a 1060 and save half the price since I dont game much and a 1060 will give me respectable performance on most games with some stuff turned down.
If I bought a 1060, I would not feel bad when nvidia brings out the next line in 2018.
Comments, thoughts? THanks
