GPU Upgrade to a 760 or 770? Or wait.

Hello people of the forums.

I'm currently in the market looking for a shiny new GPU for my rig.

Currently I have an EVGA GTX 570 with 1.2 gigs of VRAM and has held me up very well. The games I play mostly are BF4 and Borderlands 2, and soon I'll be playing Watch Dogs and Titanfall. I'm trying to aim to play games on high settings with a smooth frame rate but my GTX 570 isn't really doing it any more. I'm only gaming at 1080p on a single monitor, but I plan on having 2-3 to work on (Chrome, Lightroom, possibly CAD, possibly Coding, and email).

I'm currently looking at getting a GTX 760 or 770, either one from MSI or EVGA, but it got me thinking. I know that maxwell is coming, who knows when, and Iv been waiting for an upgrade. My question is should I wait for maxwell, or buy a GTX 760 or 770 within the coming months.

I'm open to any opinions and suggestions, I'm trying to get an idea of where maxwell is currently and the kind of news surrounding it. Plus wether it'll be a good performance bump from my current GTX 570

MOBO: MSI H87-G43
RAM: 8 Gigs GSkill Sniper 1600mhz
HD: WD Caviar Black 1 Terabyte
GPU: EVGA GTX 570 1.2 gigs VRAM
OS: Windows 8.1
PSU: Rosewell 600w ( I don't know the model off the top of my head.)

To be honest, absolutely nothing. The only way AMD have a hold over Nvidia right now is that they offer Graphics cards that cost less but provide higher amounts of video memory, which is useful on higher resolution displays or...

The maxwell thingy kinda hurts brains. When they come, you will have the stock nvidia on'es with bad cooling and stock frequency.
But It's something definitely to wait for and SEE what they will bring to us.
ofc...when they come, they will cost soo much and the 7xx series price will drop!

770 is a very good price/performace GPU and it will run all your games on max. That's not something you should not worry about.
I like the MSI one, smexy red a black combo with nice dragon is really nice.

Definitely get the GTX 770. I just got a Gigabyte one with 3 fans and boy oh boy I love it! It runs games maxed out save for 2-4x anti-aliasing, is super cool, and also pretty quiet too! As long as you're gaming on a 1080p monitor the 2GB video memory will be fine for the next few years, if you need more I would say take a look at the 280X from AMD, the 4GB version of the GTX 770 is pretty much a hoax because it only has a 256-bit memory bus. Good luck choosing, but for 1080p go with the 770!

the 4GB edition isn't for increased performance at 1080p its for larger resolutions that require a high V-Ram and for multi-monitor setups. Don't discredit the 4GB editions as I run one with me 3 monitors and play games at max at 5760x1080p. Especially the Classified edition!

Maxwell will have wider memory bandwidth to go along with that ram because of the new feature which will allow the cpu to access the gpu's ram. Also maxwell's tegra cpu will handle physX so physX won't slow down games anymore.

I understand that it's for higher resolutions, but the 4GB for the 770 is a hoax, due to the 256-bit memory bus. I'm gonna call your bluff when you say you max out everything at 5760x1080p, hell the 770 can't nearly max out everything at 1080p! I agree that the 770 is a fantastic GPU, but you're kidding yourself. Either get the 770 2GB model OP, or if you need more VRAM, go with the AMD R9 280X or if you have the money a GTX 780.

The new 800 line is going to be awesome, but there has yet to be even a hint of when it will arrive, and with all of the performance upgrades and the fact that they are all brand new architectures and models, the price point will most likely be a lot higher than the 700 line GPUs. Something that has the power of a 760 but with more memory and those features may cost almost $300, we don't know yet.

Bluff? Why would I lie under these circumstances? That would prove nothing to anyone... So please all knowing explain my need to make up stories of my hardware that could be (If I was lying) easily disproved.

You say your GTX 770 4GB graphics card can max out "any game" at 5760x1080p. Here is a link to a benchmarking video of someone playing Crysis 3 at not even max settings, just very high + 4xMSAA, on 1920x1080 resolution, averaging only 37 frames per second! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zoBtnTn5Fo
Maybe you can run them at max, at 2 frames per second! Please don't try to mislead people that's not cool...

Crysis 3 is also a game that was designed as its predecessors to be ahead of it's hardware generation. Not even the titan, 780 Ti's can play that game with all filters on and be at optimal frames at all times. This argument is pointless whether you believe me or not I play all games including BF4 at max setting at 5760x1080p. I'm sorry you don't believe me but this doesn't change my personal experience and I won't attempt any further to argue over this subject. This is someone else's help thread. As far as me misleading I did not such thing you tried to discredit the 4GB editions to be a "hoax" that is misleading as they have their place and purpose that they fulfill with or without your belief in it.

Exactly why I was questioning why you started this debate on this thread as well, and I know you're still lying, and unless you upload a video showing that you are it's impossible. I barely average 60 FPS on ultra settings in BF4 on 1080P, maxing means turning up the AA to max, 16X.... you either have no idea what you're talking about or are trolling, so I'm going to stop replying to you.

Agreed. Although I have had a bunch of issues and broken cards in the R9 range, but I think they're getting around to fixing that.

I am only gaming on a 1080p monitor ( To be more accurate its a 40 inch Samsung Tv) what is the advantage of having an AMD card over an Nvidia besides bus speed for multiple monitors when Im only gaming on 1?

AMD GPUs have better overclocking potential, but the fans can get loud at times
Nvidia GPUs are less cpu dependent, so cpus limit Nvidia gpus less
Both however are pretty good graphics and both have games designed to work better on eachother

The only way AMD have a hold over Nvidia right now is that they offer Graphics cards that cost less but provide higher amounts of video memory, which is useful on higher resolution displays or when a lot of anti-aliasing is required. I believe however that when the new Maxwell line of GPU's are announced by Nvidia, they will do the same, with their $350 GPU's containing 3 if not 4 GB of video memory. However, on a single 1080P display, 2GB will be plenty of video memory for most games for the next few years. The only games that come close to maxing out my memory at 1080P would be a heavily graphically modded Skyrim, and I mean heavy modding, possibly Crysis 3 (don't own so I can't test, but one can assume it uses a lot), and Battlefield 4, which for me uses between 1600-1850 MB of Video Ram when I play. Keep in mind, that is on all ultra settings, usually with 4X or better MSAA. Having more than 2GB of video memory will benefit you in the future when more games need more than 2GB, but that's not going to be for a while. By the time you will be really struggling running games with 2GB of VRAM, the rest of your GPU will be outdated as well.

Ahh I see, makes sense. Well I was thinking heavily about the Gtx 770 from MSI, but now that you tell me this I think i'll make the smart move and wait till Maxwell or find an AMD substitute. Thank you!

Sure, if that's what you want to do! I just got a new GTX 770 From Gigabyte, the 2GB version, and it absolutely demolishes everything I throw at it, but if you want to wait that might end up working out for you, your choice. If you do decide to go with AMD, I might be repeating myself here, but the 280X is only slightly slower than the 770 and has plenty of VRAM. The more powerful 290 is a touch slower than the 780 but has 4GB of 512 Bit-bus memory, which is crazy! Good luck, and thanks for the answer!
