I currently have a half decent system and I am looking for some advice on what card I should get
my current system specs are below I was thinking about using crossfire although I am unsure of this are should I buy a newer GPU.

Current System:
P8Z77-VL X
Intel Core i5 3470
Sapphire R9 280 Dual X OC 3GB
Crucial MX SSD 256GB
WD 1TB
Corsair RM 850

So should I go for a complete new card are crossfire if I did crossfire do you know the clock speeds which I'd be achieving with my current card running at 925 MHz.

Solution
Your clockspeeds would be the same as crossfire is simply adding in another card, it doesn't influence clockspeeds.
Adding in a 2nd R9 280 will drastically improve performance, it will perform slightly better than a single R9 290. It can be done easily since your cpu is good for it and your psu is heavy enough.

Not really, if you are reffering to a single GTX 970. It will have better power consumption but the crossfire R9 280 will still usually outperform it.

didn't notice you posting a budget. that's what it all depends on.
if you're looking for the best price\performance ratio for an upgrade that would be to find a cheap 280 and crossfire.
if you're not happy with the 280 and looking for a total upgrade then 290X or 980 is the best available right now without spending crazy cash.
if you can't afford the 980 and don't want to move up to the 290X; get a good price for your 280 on ebay or amazon and put that towards a 970. they won't have you maxing out 1440p+ but they will handle 1080p with highest settings fairly well.

settled for a cheap open-box 8GB 290X and have no regrets. everything maxed out @ 1440p with no problems except now I need a display with a higher refresh rate.
