So here is my system right now.
PSU: 500W
CPU: AMD FX 6100 OC @4.3Ghz
CPU heatsink: Noctua NH-D14
GPU: EVGA GTX 660
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600
Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO
SSD: (Has OS) 480GB
HDD: (Games) 4TB

I am planning on upgrading both my CPU and GPU.
I will be upgrading to a GTX 970 and an FX 8350.
I would SLI my 660 if I could but there is no room in my case for another GPU.

My question is, what should I upgrade first?

I can only afford one at the moment and I need to know which one will give me the most performance gains alone.

Yes, gpu first. Might be some places the fx 6100 holds you back, but at that click speed I think that will minimilize that. Might consider seeing what performance looks like after that upgrade then start saving for a new board and chip. Also, save your money and get the fx 8320, still an unlocked 8 core so once you overclock should not be much difference between the 8320 and 8350.
