If running on generic windows drivers devices will not be detected properly.

Put it this way were you plugged into the GTX 740 while installing Windows. That at least proof of life. Does it mean card is fine and 100% no but something for us to go on.

Than and only than go to Nvidia.com and MANUALLY get the GTX 740's drivers for your version of windows.
Down load them, when done go to that installer and right click and run as Administrator and try too install GPU driver.
