Graphic card does not show up in dxdiag, or windows settings

i recently bought an Asus X550L laptop which comes with a nVidia 820m graphics card. After installing windows 8.1 on it, i installed the necessary up-to-date nvidia drivers on it, which installed correctly, but the graphics card wont show up under the display tab of dxdiag or in the advanced settings menu for display. in both cases, it shows the display device as Microsoft basic display adapter. Although in device manager, it show both microsoft basic display adapter and nvidia 820m listed under the display part. kindly explain as to why this is happening and some possible workarounds.

Right-Click the card where it is listed in Device Manager > Display Adapters and ensure it is set to Enabled.
