Graphics Card died - Curious as to what happened

I used to have a Nvidia 8800GT. Last month i figured it died so I got a new msi 660ti. I was just curious about what the actual fault in my old card was. This isn't my picture, but it looked very similar.

Can anyone tell me what actually causes this? Just curious. Thanks
