See this: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,1.html

The link has both 2-way SLI and 3-way SLI reviews for three different resolutions. See what FPS you need at 2560 x 1440 in the games you play and then choose as per your wish. 3-way SLI would be more future proof than 2-way but it also needs higher wattage power supply, a mobo that supports 3-way SLI and a big case for more air flow as three cards will produce more heat compared to one.

thanks for that link it helped me very much it clearly tells 3way gtx 980 sli gives more fps so i really want to go with 3way sli gtx 980 i will get a corsair ax 1500i and asus rampage v extreme motherboard i7 5820k or 5930k and cooler master storm stryker so will 3way sli give me best fps on my asus rog swift monitor or i should only go 2way sli gtx 980

Read the conclusion under "In closing" heading: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,26.html

They spoke about money value. But since you're gaming in 144 HZ, your monitor can give you 144 frames per second (and you can notice it, if you're a super human, lol).

It is recommended for you to read all the texts (including temperature, noise, overclocking performance) in that link rather than just staying in benchmarks alone.

i hope i wont get any problems with 3way sli like others said scaling is poor and many said 2way sli is better than 3way sli in gaming so still should i go with 3way sli or go with 2way sli the main thing is i want to play games for maximum performance and want to play all games with least issues

If you download a 800 x 600 resolution image and make it as a desktop background in higher resolution monitor (say 1366 x 768 & assume as if you're trying to fill the entire screen with this image), the image will stretch itself to fill the area. This stretching is called scaling. Remember giving "fit, center, tile, stretch, fill" options while setting a desktop image? That's it.

Also, I searched so many websites for 2-way 980 vs 3-way 980 and I found that 3-way 980 doesn't give much improvement as 2-way. 3-way is simply a huge waste of money for 1440p.

can you tell me benefits of 2way sli over 3way sli and also benefits of 3way sli over 2way sli for 1440p gaming on asus rog swift monitor please tell me both

3-way SLI GTX 980:
Advantages:
1) High frame rates compared to 2-way.
2) More higher resolution support. (also, you can get smooth play on three 1440p monitors)
3) More future proof.

Disadvantages:
1) Poor scaling when going to higher resolution.
2) More noise due to more fans in total.
3) More heat due to insufficient gap between three cards, between the three cards and the case. (i.e. needs a full tower case for better cooling).
4) Complete waste of money if three GTX 980s are hooked to play in one 1440p or 1600p monitor. (Even two GTX 980 is enough for single 4k monitor gaming). Also, there will be more powerful and efficient GPUs in near future for lesser money (due to competition) which you can't buy since you've already accumulated with three 980s.
Note: Nobody can notice above 60fps all the time.

2-way SLI GTX 980:
Advantages:
1) Less heat and more power efficient.
2) Less investment .
3) Very less scaling issues.

Disadvantages:
1) Comparatively lesser frame rates than 3-way.
2) Can't get enough frame rates in 4K or three 1440p monitors.

Hey, if you have lot of money to spend, will never want to upgrade your system for several years, will game now in one 1440p monitor and then upgrade to two or three 1440p monitor in near future, just get 3-way SLI.

If you are earning more money (i.e. you can upgrade your system any time by investing money), just stay with 2-way or even one GTX 980. Simply don't waste money.
Even a single GTX 970 is enough for single 1440p monitor to play all games at ultra.
