I see one onf these running a Xeon X5460 SLANP CPU. 3.15Ghz scoring 40% CPU. He posted about 2 weeks ago. It shows a TDP of 120W which is very interesting for an Optiplex. LMAO if it suports 130W QX9650! He was also running a Quadro GPU. So he might be an IT guy who knows more than the rest of us.
there are alot more examples of Opti 780 running with that CPU GPU combo.

Thanks for looking all that info up. I wish I had seen your post about doubling the RAM before, but I bought that Zotac 750ti card right away so it's on the way and an expansion slot blower from new egg. I may try doubling the RAM later. Ok I'm going to try to summarize your recommendations, tell me if I have this right.
1) "So I would RMA the 750 Ti when it gets there" What does RMA mean?
2) Get a Q9550 cpu
3) "This means the Zotac GTX1050Ti Mini is the best GPU and it fits with no mods." What mods did you mean here?

1- RMA is Returmn Merchandise Agreement, returning the unused item. it always helps if the seller has what you want in exchange.
2- You have to shop for CPUs by SLxxx "S spec." to get the older C0 stepping. The CPUID number changed after that and they won't work
from fastest to good enough are
X5460 SLANP 3.15GHz makes this one of the fastest Optis. The 120W CPU is rare in these. It requires a Xeon adapter, and maybe BIOS microcode update.
Go here for info. on this. http://www.delidded.com/ You might save this for later.
Q9550 SLAN4 Most simple and cost effective CPU. The faster Q9650 is E0 stepping and won't work.
That was an interesting research project. The usual reliable sources were wrong, and nobody had done all the good mods to the same machine.
3-The memory question is the most important. Without 8GB RAM the GTX750 1GB is the best you can do. Once you upgrade the RAM you can get the GTX1050 (Ti) 2/4GB GPUs. If you have to mod the GTX750 you won't be able to return it. If it's a full height 2 slot card it will need the bracket cut in 1/2. if it's a Low profile version that can run full height single slot then it's OK. The GTX 1050 is huge news for these computers, it's a full 1080P GPU that runs off of the PCIe slot. if you install the 750, then install the 8GB RAM then you will need to buy the GTX1050 also to benefit from it. It would be better to buy the RAM, and the GTX1050 in the first place.
4- The Zotac GTX1050(Ti) Mini has just one expansion slot bracket. The cooler is 2 slots wide but that doesn't matter because it's also very short in length. So you don't need to cut the bracket in 1/2. Some cards are long enough they need mods at the front. Mostly high power3ed ITX cards.

i'm going to post a link to the Optiplex 780 page so you can see some computers running this CPU/GPU combo. Your scores will be a tick lower due to the 780s DDR3 RAM. But they can't run that 120W XEON ever.

I would do the RAM first, then the CPU. and get the Zotac GTX1050 Mini. The 1050TI. or even the GTX1060 3GB mini with your PSU would be higher cost options.
The 1060 has hard mounted DVI port in the 2nd bracket, so a case mod would be required to use it.
The Xeon would be a separate project, but also the cherry on top!

I looked at this around 11:30 pm and it had already sold but there was another ad for the same memory for $22 and I jumped on it. Thx!

I don't see a CPU listed.
As usual info. on that computer is hard to come by. But it doesn't have a UEFI BIOS. Unfortunately MSI cards tend to be UEFI. I'm trying to find that out now.
A very good chance it won't work. They don't list this info. on the website.
that card would need the bracket mod anyway.

I could return the msi. What brands are legacy? It's from New Egg, do they have a good return policy?
This is the cpu

Yes Newegg is good about RMAs. I have posted a question about that card being UEFI.
No that's the wrong Q9550. If you look in the photo you will see SLBBV next to Malay.
You need one that says SLAN4 there. Search for SLAN4 not Q9550. You need the older CPU, the older GPU interface, and the older low density memory for that. You can make it run, but everything must be just so. But keep reading it may work out anyway.
I hope you got Intel rated memory and not the AMD stuff. This is a tricky computer to mod, but actually has good potential for an Optiplex.
There is a BIOS mod to run the newer E0 CPUs, and since your computer allows over 95W CPUs MAYBE a QX9650 would run.

If this works with the CPU you ordered it could open the door to 3.33GHz Xeons or or C2X Unlocked CPUs later. You're getting into the deep end of the pool here.
I own the Zotac, Mini GTX 1050Ti and it doesn't say UEFI anywhere on the box. I haven't installed it yet. No mods required.

Go back and take notes of what I posted before This is all in there, the details are important. Modding a Dell BTX isn't a one size fits all operation.
iI may seem like a big PITA but when you get done you will know a lot more than when you started.

I didn't buy the CPU or the RAM yet. (I thought I bought the RAM but it didn't go through)
The CPU I looked at had SLAN4 in the title but SLB8V on the processor pic
1)Does the ram have to have Intel in the name?
2) Are we looking for 240 pin ram and does it have to say 512X64 non ECC DDR2 800mhz? I just need to know what to look for in the title. Should my search sentence be something like " 8gb kit 2x 4gb 512 X 64 non ECC ddr2 800MHz pc desktop memory pc2-6400 dimm ram for Intel" ?
3)Will this RAM work?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/282658007213?rmvSB=true
4) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-8GB-Kit-2x-4GB-DDR2-800MHz-PC-Desktop-Memory-PC2-6400-DIMM-Ram-for-Intel/222675982400?epid=2274903450&hash=item33d885d840:g:cm4AAOSw1TRZyitB
Never bought from China before. Bad part is may not get it till Dec 15
5)Check this ram
https://www.amazon.com/2x4GB-DDR2-800MHz-Desktop-Memory-PC2-6400/dp/B00KFN7CL2
I guess I'll just keep watching till I find some RAM that works.
When the GPU comes in I'll return it for the Zotac 1050ti.

You can run the SLAN4, or the SLANP 3.15GHz LGA 771 Xeon which requires some mods. With BIOS patch which is risky then more CPUs can run. SLAN4 is cheap and easy.
I tried to buy the 2X4 GB for you but I don't use Paypal so it didn't go through. Maybe the CPU auction was for a SLAN4 but the photo was generic.

Should my search sentence be something like " 8gb kit 2x 4gb 512 X 64 non ECC ddr2 800MHz pc desktop memory pc2-6400 dimm ram for Intel" ? I need to know what to include and what not to include.
Thx

You might not get any hits if the seller didn't list it that way. PC2 6400 is the same as DDR2 800 so you get more hits with both.
ECC is easy to spot it has a 9th chip in the middle. FBDIMMs have a 9TH controller chip and almost always have heatsinks with a big bump in the middle.
"8GB kit 2X4GB DDR2 800 PC2 6400 Intel" should work
if you look at the label you should see 2Rx8, or 2R8x,thatt means 2 rows of 8 chips, that's low density. 512x64 is 4GB low densit.
, 256x64 would be 2GB low density,.256x128 would be 4GB high density AMD RAM, 512x72 would be 4 GB ECC.
I would do a search with Intel and see what you get. At least you can say if you get AMD it's not your fault. But I think you'll get AMD in there also.
Then search without it and see if you get any interesting hits.
512x64 bits equals 512 x 8 Bytes so 4096 MB is 4GB. It has to be arranged x64 for a Dell to read it. Thye're pretty rare.

he's listing all possible Sxxxx codes telling you that you don't know what your going to get. $78 is way too much.
http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/?filter=socket-lga-775,series-core-2-quad,fsb-1333,node-45nm,stepping-c0
I went to delidded.com and filtered the results for you.
Here is the list filtered to include LGA771 Xeons. They will require a sticker/adapter, a socket mod (cut the locating tabs out) and maybe a BIOS mod that I linked to earlier.
http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/?filter=socket-lga-771,socket-lga-775,series-core-2-quad,series-xeon,fsb-1333,node-45nm,stepping-c0
E5450 gets you to Q9650 level ,and Q5460 gets 3.17GHz.
There are links to seller there and the Sxxxxx code and stepping is on the right

Cool, it will take a 9650. So could I use 2 4gb sticks of ram and Win7/64?
What graphics card would be good for this one? This is definately the best new solution, Thanks! :)
