I have a 10 yr old GatewayGT5414E, still works great. Can I upgrade my graphics card and if so can you recommend one?

Careful with Amd cards on older mobo's. About the time of pcie 2.3 amd switched its power delivery system, so depending on the mobo newer amd cards may or may not be compatible, even if they fit physically into the slot. Nvidia cards are backwards compatible all the way back to pcie 1.1, which would make them a better choice.
Assuming the PSU can handle it, you're going to top out at 6xx series Nvidia cards and the best of the AMD Sapphire boards up to the 390x that include a legacy BIOS switch.

So the best legacy cards would be GTX 660 or GTX 670 type cards, or anything from AMD that still has legacy BIOS support. A Sapphire R9 270x with a legacy BIOS switch would be pretty ideal.
