Graphics card help please

When I play a game on my graphics card (R9 280x) most if not all the time it will begin at 1010mhz then after a minute or 2 it will overheat (sometimes freez the game) and downlclock to 501mhz, and then I can play the game fine but I don't think the game runs as smoothly

Make sure your case has good airflow and clean your card of any dust. Also, make sure the fans on your card are working fine by changing the speed with an overclocking program and listening for any weird noises and that the temps drop when you increase the fans.
