I have a friend who has just been given a PC and if im not mistaken it can take a cracker of a graphics card, but im not sure, here's the spec, what do you guys think?

Intel Core i7 860@2.80GHz
8.00GB RAM

he has a GeForce210 installed currently, should he just keep that?

Solution

He hasn't been using the 210, he was just recently given the PC is what I'm understanding.

As far as used cards go, I've...

ur not living up to ur name bro.

lol no i know what u mean. but my recommendation is based on the fact that it is an older system plus he has gone with a 210 until now. so (not to be offensive but...) thats a pretty low bar and any $50 card will blast his mind away.
id recommend something better if he decided to upgrade the whole rig.. overspending on a gpu with earlier models.. meh iono man i just dont think its wise.

As far as used cards go, I've been in that train of thought before. I had to stop recommending used GPUs because of the risk involved in buying them. I think the CPU can handle a current-gen entry level gaming card if not more. Plus older generation GPUs typically require bigger/better power supplies. Some are even better than more recent entry level cards for less cost though there is risk involved.

Good performing/priced used cards include: (If found for the right price.)

GTX 560 Ti (448 core)
GTX 660
GTX 660 Ti
GTX 760

Current entry level gaming cards that perform similar:

GTX 750 Ti (superceded by GTX 1050 Ti)
RX 460
GTX 950
GTX 1050 (Soon to be released)
GTX 1050 Ti

ah yeah my bad. i skim through a lot of text.. but even then.. the latest cards will just be OP with that system.
i guess its good call to buy one that he will keep for the next rig he buys.
but we dont have that information.
