Hello,

I have a decent PC with a crappy graphics card which is the only thing holding my gaming back
I have 4 gigs of RAM and an Intel Core 2 duo E6400 of 2.13 Ghz
Its a Dell Optiplex 745 MiniTower and it has a Power Supply of 305w or so

I need a Graphics card within 20-50$ (Without having to upgrade the entire thing)
Yep, I know I'm cheap, but I'm pretty desperate since my PC can't run even most games such as League of Legends and DOTA 2
(Dota 2 ftw)

But for some weird reason I can run Elder Scrolls Oblivion perfectly yet games like "Skullgirlz" won't despite being a linear game

And after researchin' my sh*t, I came across these Graphics cards

NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 = $50

NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 = $50

GeForce 210 = $27.50

NVIDIA GeForce GT 520 = $50

NVIDIA GeForce GT 610 = $38

AMD Radeon HD 6450 = $35

Tell me the "best choice" since my budget is pretty much limited, and if the cards that I chose
"will even" work or fit inside the case

Also does it being Single-Width or Dual-Width matter?
And if it does which of the graphics cards that I listed will actually work?

Answer with minimum detail please :3
Just kidding write as much as you want

~Cheers

Solution
Let me give you some Options...

1) Sapphire Radeon R7 250 2GB DDR3 - $77 after rebate - http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11215-01-20G/dp/B00FLMKIHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1435953439&sr=1-1&keywords=AMD+R7+250
Brief Description: consumes only around 65W when gaming and will need the very least a 300W PSU. I asked an R7 250 user running on 300W and they say it's flawless and nothing has gone wrong. small in size

2) Nvidia EVGA GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 - $74 - http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Profile-Graphics-02G-P3-3733-KR/dp/B00L5GZG5C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1435954142&sr=1-1&keywords=GT+730
Brief Description: Consumes around 55W or less will need minimum 300W PSU. will work...

I just checked the specifications on the GeForce GT 730
It says that the 128 bit one (The largest out of all of them) is 5.4 cm long...
As for the rest they are all below 6 cm fortunately....except for the AMD Radeon HD 6450 which is 168mm or 16.8cm

Does this mean that, I will not run into issues when I install a graphics card (ex: GeForce GT-730)
Because I do not know the other requirements for installing one

~Cheers

Will I run into any issues when I install a graphics card since I have exactly zero experience in doing so
Are there other requirements that need to be met so that i won't run into these "issues" other than the physical size of the computer and the PSU

some cards need additional power from the psu, but i don't think any on your shortlist do, so that'll be one less thing to worry about.
when you have your hardware and are ready to install it, static electricity is the enemy. socks on carpet is a no-no. bare feet on a hard floor is ideal.
plug the power lead in, but don't switch it on, and grab the metal chassis of the case to ground yourself. do that repeatedly and often while working on it and it'll be fine.
line the card's connector up with the slot on the motherboard, and the bracket lug with the slot in the metal tray under the motherboard. push straight in until the safety catch clicks, fit the screw to the bracket, install the drivers and you're finished. have a beer to celebrate :)

If you can still find a passively cooled card the only consideration is the age of the power supply and the resolution you play at. I have a Zotac 240GT/2.13GHz dual core and Sapphire HD6670U/2.5GHz quad. The only ones that are close on your list are the GT730 and HD6450. Otherwise the gameplay isn't better than the on-board graphics at 1024x800. New passive cards have all but disappeared.

Sorry if I seem to prolong this..
But on a website that I found (namely game-debate) states that the GeForce 730 needs 22 amps...
I'm not sure if its a suggestion or minimum requirement
While you said that mine was 18 amps
Does this matter? If so, will I be unable to to install it?

~Cheers

I wouldn't ignore the HD 5450 or 6450. For one thing I believe those models ran cooler than the NVidia cards and required less power. The could provide decent gaming for a few titles, better than on-board graphics. They're also cheap in passive cooled cards. They may also be better at higher resolutions but then I would recommend a 400 or larger watt power supply, especially for NVidia cards.

Well, I did check that the Nvidia cards (specifically Nvdia GeForce 730) had a requirement of 300w according to game-debate... Also I checked which games It was capable of (example Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Naruto Ninja Storm Revolution, Dragon Age 2, etc) in which the HD 6450 or HD 5450 was not capable of

But though....
The HD 6450 costs like $37 while the HD 5450 costs like $34 in Amazon
While the Gt 730 costs like $49.99

Also, I'm more concern whether or not the HD 6540 or 5450 will actually fit in my cpu
Given that it's a Dell Optiplex 745 (I mentioned it already, for the millionth time 😀)

Cause they don't give the specifications in detail in their website such as length, etc.
so I have second thoughts on buying their products

~Cheers

dude on that power supply i wouldnt trust it most of the power supplys are generic and horrible garbage your choice if you want it to nuke itself

my personal opinion would be to upgrade it but its your funeral if it dies
recomendation below
450w gold rated power supply at 23 dollars corsair
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139058&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

as for gpu i wouldnt recomend anything lower then a gt 730 ddr5 it will cost 65 exactly maybe a lil more with tax dunno

but its the cheapest semi gaming card ddr5 is faster then ddr3 and will be more stable for gaming the bandwidth shouldnt be a a factor to much it will still kick a pants of a ddr3 card

its best bang card out there
http://www.amazon.com/PNY-GeForce-GDDR5-Graphics-VCGGT7301D5LXPB/dp/B00KYCTCZ8/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1435772188&sr=1-1&keywords=730+ddr5

so my advise if you wanna risk it get the 730 ddr5 it will run cool and isnt overly power drawing so it should be fine for a while but i suggest as soon as you can get the power supply above mentioned or a 430w 80 plus corsair so you can upgrade later to a 750 ti evga superclocked single fan card

All I can say to this is that, If you wanted to play games like Dota 2 and league of legends. Better get the GT 730. Anything lower than that is practically not worth it. Price to performance ratio. the GT 730 is like 75% better than the HD 6450. Now the power supply, I recommend you on buying a new one. it doesn't have to be the best, But a good brand. You could get a 400W Rosewill or Evga power supply for just $20. What resolution are you playing at by the way?

just had to check the psu in mine... it looks like a standard ATX unit, so go with beyondlogic's suggestion if you can.

don't worry about it too much if not, the power supplies in old dells are pretty reliable. my 745 was running an asus HD6670 with no problems, except for having to chop a bit off the shroud to make it fit.

Good research on the games so go with the GT730. As for size look at Newegg and see how tiny they are. Passive cards usually command a higher price. Performance is usually as good. The double slot provides more connections so if you want to use it for HTPC it could be desirable. All probably have HDMI 1.4. My 240GT has HDMI1.3 and is fine for HTPC. The DisplayPort on my cards is mostly unused but it is there. I mostly use NVidia, partly because I need PhysX. I don't have much to complain about them except the builders, who can depart from the NVidia design started pumping up the PS requirement specs on wattage required, although as pointed out by someone the amps are important. The GT730 should have little problem especially if you have been using any graphics card already. Still, look into your PS thoroughly.

Hmmmm......
having to buy a ddr5 730 was a choice I considered but then realized that to do so I had to upgrade my PSU as well which I need an extra $50 for

My only concern is whether it will actually run or not
If it does run, will there be any problems when it does?
"Tech-wreck" stated that the power supplies of old dells were reliable..

Like I said my budget is limited to $50 since I am spendin' the rest of it for "something" else....

And as for the GeForce 730 GT it did state that it consumed only 300w
I am not planning to buy the GDDR5 one since at full price its about $75-$80

I don't really have a big budget like I said earlier
I will, once I get a part-time job

And besides I am not looking to upgrade my PC with a 750 ti for now, but I will keep this in mind once I "do" have the budget and if I "do" upgrade the entire thing

But as of the moment, should I really get the GeForce GT 730 DDR3 1GB for $50 or so
And will it actually work?

Specifically this one :3

(This is what its like to be a gamer with no cash, lol)

Resolution?
I think resolution is not a big problem since I don't mind playing in the lowest settings

I have no room for cash to buy the card if I decided to buy the power supply....
Forgive me, for I am a cheap gamer to the point in which a $20 power supply is a fortune

If I do have the extra cash, then I might consider it

~Cheers

the gt 730 ddr5 1gb card i mentioned will probly be fine in your system just when you have the money get the power supply check newegg frequently for either a corsair evga power supply 80 plus rated at least 400w -430w like i stated its a gamble on that power supply but not a huge gamble

i say the ddr5 version as ddr3 performance cards are not worth it it even at the lowest settings these cards struggle due to there low clock speeds and your 50 usd would be wasted and youd have to upgrade again theres such a think as going too low

I don't mind upgrading it later on...(Ik, that sounds stupid)
My current graphics card is beyond crap and I just wanted an upgrade no matter it takes
I already made up my mind buyin' the ddr3, I'm sure there isn't much of a difference 😀

And besides the DDR5 version is 5.7 inches long
I measured my PC, and the estimation of how long a graphics card can fit in "there" is about 5 to 5.5 inches (I don't even now if that matters)
While the DDR3 (64-bit) is just 3.4 inches....so yeah

Though my only concern is the "PCI" slot thing

Reading through the specs of my computer
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/opti_745techspecs.pdf

I saw these:

PCI-Ex1
PCI-E
PCI Express x16

Does this mean that my motherboard has all three slots? (Sorry, I am a noob)

While the one I was planning to buy (730 GT DDR3) states that its PCI Express 2.0
Does this mean that its incompatible?
Will I run into issues when I try to install my graphics card?

I completely have no experience in this, and I really need some help
And no, I haven't bought the card yet

Thanks

~Cheers

Asking the "voltage" of his 12v rail and you wonder why he isnt giving you the right information? Maybe if you asked the right questions. The correct question would have been asking the amperage of the 12v rail.

to the OP: Assuming the GT730 can physically fit in your case, that should be fine for you and your PSU. GTX 750 work on a 300w psu, so i see no reason why a GT730 wouldnt.

To be honest I don't usually recommend used components but... If you REALLY want to make the most out of your money I would consider it an option. At the 20-50 dollar price range you are just going to waste money on junk. I just picked up an HD 7770 off ebay for 40 bucks. If it doesn't work you can send it back and it's not really too big of a risk. If you look hard enough you should be able to find something :)

i'm adding a +1 to buying used.
but to reiterate, a longer card will fit, but it will mean chopping off the plastic lugs on the underside of the shroud, a pair of wire cutters worked for me.
the green arrow is where i cut some away to make this fit.

True that the card only costs $40, but shipping cost around $20 since I am overseas
Did I mention that I do not live in the States

As for AMD, I do not know the specifications such as length, height, required PSU and etc. since they provide such limited information on their websites

If you give me a proper specs of these "AMD" cards I might consider it since it's cheaper 😀

*edit*
I saw that they require (6670 HD and 7770 HD) a PSU of 400w or more
I want to have a graphics card that doesn't make me have to upgrade my PSU since I have such a little budget....
I don't want to risk running a card requiring 400w in a 305w PSU
