I am using a gigabyte Z87X-UD3H motherboard and a XFX Radeon R9 290 graphics card, however with the graphics card plugged in I just get a black screen. and Im not really sure what I can do to change this as my when I've ran my computer with the integrated graphics being the primary one my computer doesn't seem to be detecting that I have the graphics card plugged in.

Solution
Buy a HDMI/DVI cable and connect it to your gpu, NOT to the motherboard. But first be sure your monitor supports HDMI/DVI or you will have to buy a new monitor too!
gigabyte Z87X-UD3H motherboard
XFX Radeon R9 290 graphics card
OCZ-ZS650W PSU
Ballistix 8GB DDR3L - 1600 CL9 RAM
Intel I-5 4770k GPU
3 case fans
PHANTEKS PH-TC12DX cooler
and some pci card i took from my old pc
I think thats everything thanks for your time

Yeah the only cable i've got for my monitor doesn't fit into the back of my R9 290 so i plugged straight into the motherboard.
