Graphics Card Suggestions Low Budget

Just a bit of background first of all. My PC is a custom build and was built to meet the requirements of the software for my university degree and my casual gaming habit. I haven't upgraded for sometime - I just didn't need to. Now I could do with a graphics card with 2GB+ Dedicated Video RAM to keep up with some of the newer releases I'd like to play.

I'm not foolish enough to know that ultimately I really need to look at a proper upgrade/new build as my CPU is starting to show its age too. Money wise that's not realistic right now. My hope is to find a graphics card which will do the job now and be transferable when I can afford to the do the job right. (If that is not a realistic hope, please let me know so I save my money for the new build.)

My current build features a ASUS M4A78LT-M motherboard featuring a PCIe 2.0 x16 and is uATX Form Factor, PSU is 500W. My case is comfortably housing a AMD Radeon HD 6670 so a card around the same size would be ideal

Thanks in advance.

rx 460 or gtx 1050 would be about max gpu wise for that setup

it is not worth upgrading beyond that

Im not sure what cpu you have but I would get a 1050 or a 1050ti. They are both great cards for the money and will fit perfectly in your machine.

Thanks for the replies. I've had a look at the cards suggested and can see why they were. I might hold fire given the price point solely because when I do upgrades and custom builds, I can normally save money by getting everything at the same time. Any other recommendations welcome.

I'm not sure why you're so vague about your computer. CPU/motherboard/amount of ram and some specific titles of software or games you intend to run, and the resolution you intend to run them at, would be helpful to know.

You may have a dual core Athlon II or a quad core Phenom II, and there IS a difference believe me. Because of the age of the motherboard, I'd favor going with a used card like a 2gb GTX 650 Ti or GTX 660. An HD 7850/7870 would be the AMD way to go. Make sure the card uses the pci-ex connector your power supply has. I'm assuming it has one.

You say you'd like to bring the card with you to your next build. That being the priority, then I'd buy a 1050 Ti and hope it works. By the time you build a new computer, nothing less than a 1050 Ti will be worth reusing.

I wasn't intentionally being vague about my computer. So in answer to the above poster:

CPU: Phenom II X4 965
Motherboard: ASUS M4A78LT-M
Amount of Ram: 8GB

As for titles, I no longer have a console and have no intention of getting a replacement (due to long and boring reasons.) Any gaming is being done through my PC. I play a lot of Civ 6 on my PC but games which I would have normally gone with console versions of such as Grand Theft Auto V (as an example) will now also come onto my PC in time.

I've been looking at recommended specs for some of the games and have decided that a proper upgrade is needed. I have a mind to get a RX580 or Geforce GTX 1060 GPU from the reviews/research I have been doing.

your setup is not good enough for either of those cards

if you want them it's time for a full upgrade to either intel or ryzen

Yes, I know. I am sorry for any confusion. I said from the off that I was aware my computer was showing it's age. The advice I received only cemented that my original plan wasn't going to work hence why I said am going to do a proper upgrade i.e. bringing it up to date to allow me to use a better card that my current system can cope with.
