In those areas, guess what? Your framerate with the 9800GTX would be exactly the same as if you'd had the vastly weaker 9500GT. The reason why is because in either case, the video card is being bottlenecked by other parts of the system.

The only person you're fooling here is yourself, to think that your video card is the only component that affects your framerate. I gave you the answers as to why, yet you dismissed them out of hand without addressing them. Sorry, but an education and job in IT do not translate to understanding gaming performance; that's a different field entirely from IT. (and primarily falls under IT's opposite in computing, computer engineering)

nottheking. I never said that the only variable that effects your FPS is your video card. If you can find anywhere that I have stated such, please quote me on it. I am stating that network lag does NOT effect frame rate in WoW. It is as simple as that and very true.

what video card setting do you all use?

i have tried a variety of setting on my computer and i cant get more than 30 fps

It depends what system you have, processor, graphic card and monitor resolution. Here's some examples. Athlon64 3000, 7600GS AGP, 1440x900 with all settings turned down, shadows off will get 40 fps for general questing, drop to 20+ fps in graphically intensive areas (crowded towns, group PvP and raids). A E6750, 8800GT, 1680x1050 all graphics on high, shadows enabled will get 60+ fps general gaming, dropping to 40s in graphically intense areas. If you're having trouble, first disable shadows, then start lowering settings one at a time, a notch at time. Check gameplay and repeat till you're satisfied with the results.

well the wow setting i have are: oh i have a nvidia 8800, with sli disabled

anisotropic filtering: 4x
antialiasing - gamma correction: on
antialiasing - mode: enhanced
antialiasing - setting: 4x
antialiasing - transparency: multisampling
error reporting: off
conforming texture clamp: hardware
extension limit: off
force mipmaps: trilinear
maximum pre-rendered frames: 3
multi-display/mixedgpu acc: single
texture filtering - anisotropic: on
texture filtering - negative lod:allow
texture filtering - quality: high performance
texture filtering - trilinear opt: off
triple buff: on
verticle sync: use 3d app setting

and in game i have a mix of high and low stuff.

i have even turned off the addons i use and make no difference.

i am curious why the fps is below 30 at times and other times it is 20-40+

it is so inconsistent

Please note do not get a 9800GTX (not to sure the GT) i have this card and am replacing it, as it does not have a good stanable FPS rate in wow (even in azoroth its at 60fps but jumps a lot of the time down to 12-20fps which causes lag, which my old 7900gs held a constant 60 fps there).

this card will make your wow needs rage !

I am running a 8800gs, only getting about 20 fps if that outside of main cities. With all of you saying you can max fps with a 8800gts. How, what system are you running?

You're replying in an old thread, some recent patches in WotLK make the game more graphic intensive. Your processor, the resolution of your monitor and what settings you have your game set at will make huge differences in the game. Here's some recent benchmarks, your 8800GS is pretty equal to a HD4670.

notice the huge hit with shadows full on.
