I'm putting together a gaming PC for my brother using some of my old PC parts but need to buy a new graphics card. I've been looking at the AMD Radeon R7 370 or the soon to be released Nvidia GTX 950.

Would these graphics cards be held back by the old processor?

Hello Rich Pitchshift,

You can certainly R7 370 or GTX 950 with Phenom II 955. Keep in mind that this processor is now 6 years old, released way back in 2009. So definitely you may not have the best experience possible. but would certainly have decent game play experiences in latest/upcoming modern games, provided you have at least 8GB RAM.

Consider the following video in which the person plays GTA V with Phenom II 955, R9 270, 8GB RAM getting a solid average of 40-60+ FPS without Fraps. This will give you an idea of what kind of experience you may get, for example, if you pair Phenom II 955 and R7 370 with 8GB RAM.

You may also consider the R9 370X expected to be released the same time the GTX 950 releases The R9 370X is said to be the answer from AMD to counter the NVIDIA's GTX 950.
