As you can see from the title I'd like to know which graphics card will work with my motherboard. Here are my specs:

Dell Studio D540
Service Tag #: 6574VH1
Current GPU: ATI Radeon HD3600series
PSU: (Not stock) Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 500W

I found a few that others said would work on newegg that ranged from $69-$130. I'm sure even the $70 one would be an upgrade, lol. So, if I could get some advice on a more gamer-friendly video card that is compatible that'd be great. I only need it to play games like WoW, LoL, Fallout 4 on medium-to-high settings. Nothing too extreme. Thanks :D

Solution
If this is your motherboard,

m017g_top_800.jpg

Then it has a PCIe 16x slot which can fit all modern Graphics cards. But your power supply isn't of very high quality so I wouldn't choose a GPU that would push its limits. Perhaps a more entry level GPU would suit you better.

Since the R7 250 doesn't consume a lot of power, and that it doesn't require extra power from a 6pin PSU connector, I think it would be a great choice. I'm not sure if it can run fallout 4 at 1080p smoothly , but LoL and WoW should be fine. It costs around $80-90. Opt for the GDDR5 version.
If you're looking for an upgrade to play fallout 4 smoothly, you might need to upgrade the whole PC :/

@ IronBatman - Thank you for your informative answer! :D That's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I have one other question as well if you don't mind... Here are the 3 GPU's I've been looking at - which one would you recommend and would they be compatible / work properly with my PSU?

These are the ones I've had my eyes on. Let me know what you think and which would be best for my needs: (Obviously a more expensive one is the optimal choice, but if there's hardly a difference between an 80$ and a 100$ one - I'd rather save 20 bucks then not to actually notice a difference w/ my own 2 eyes - and not by running numbers.)

These are all from Newegg.com: I hope I have provided enough information that you don't have to put too much effort into answering! Let me know if you need more :D

since fallout 4 is relatively new, I couldn't find a lot of benchmarks.

from the benchmarks, the GTX 750 ti is the minimum GPU required to run Fallout 4 smoothly. So if running fallout 4 is your top priority, then you might need to upgrade the whole PC :/

Fallout 4 was more of a "If I can" type thing honestly. This PC is one that I'm handing over to my girlfriend to play her main games - WoW, LoL, Heroes of the Storm, etc while I'm building my new PC with all the expensive stuff, lol. Out of the 3 I listed and the 4th you had suggested - what would be the best bang for my buck / and won't bottle neck my PSU? And are the $10-$20 more expensive one's really that much better?

I'm new to this site.. Do I HAVE to hit "reply to *name here* for them to receive a notification, or can I just answer as a new comment? Mainly asking so you don't have to scroll all the way down each time to reply :D

If you comment, I would be able to receive the notification. No need to tag me or anything. I'm not very sure but if I were in your shoes, I would go with the r7 250 since its the safest. You could take the gamble and go for GPUs that consume more power, or you could upgrade the PSU too and have no problems when you upgrade ur GPU.

Of course, if you'd like your lady to join you in fallout 4 you could spend more and go with these

But if you dont want to upgrade the PSU, a single R7 250 would be the safest bet. I'm not saying the r7 250x or GT 740 won't work, I'm saying that the PSU might not handle them in the long run.

Hey guys,

Not sure for what reason, but I have the system as you, and I have had incredible difficulty trying to upgrade to a GTX 750Ti.

540 Dell Studio
Q8200
0m017G
350W PSU

I used to have a Radeon 6670 and it worked fine. I upgraded summer 2015 from windows 7 to windows 10, card still worked fine.

This week, I tried installing a 750 Ti, which everything pointed towards no incompatible issues.I’ve went though all normal uninstalls of older drivers, tried installing new drivers without luck (cannot detect card). Tried uninstalling Integrated graphics and disabling, nothing. Does not appear in device manager.

Went though Bios and tried to give priority to PCI-e, no options possible. Updated to BIOS vers 1.1.3 from Dell website. Going though the BIOS and searching on the web made me realize how much crap this motherboard is.. Called Dell, they have no clue what they are talking about. They told me this card was incompatible and it was normal since this card is 8x faster than my old card, and also that the only other supported card is the integrated graphics, when I just told them I had a 6670 installed and worked perfect wtf?

Tried to install User runtimes for DX9-10 for older PC’s for linking DX12 windows 10 and DX11 graphic card, no luck.

I don't know if it's a motherboard problem, windows 10 problem, or ...?

Still haven't resolved this, be careful as to what you buy and make sure it works before buying, so you don't get stuck like me!
