Graphics card wont send signal to my motherboard

I finally finished building my first computer, but when i try putting in the gpu (gtx 980) my monitor gets no signal, if i dont have the gpu installed then it works fine. Is there a solution to this in the bios settings?
Specs:
Z170 pro gaming
8 gb ddr4 2400
Gtx 980
i5 6600k

Currently connected to the mobo, but ive tried connecting to the gpu while i had it installed, but it still didn't work
