graphics confuse meh

if a graphics card is installed and i put vga cable in my motherboards port the screen dosent display anything. i cant put anything in the graphics card because the case dosent let me use my hdmi and i havent got a dvi.
so is there a way i can keep the graphics card in and use the motherboards port yet still get good performance
