So I am planning to purchase a graphic card and from these two options I have to take a decision (from only these two). Specs are as follows.

GT 640, GDDR3 2GB, 128bits
http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N640GT-MD2GD3.html#?div=Specification

GTX 550Ti, GDDR5 1GB, 192bits
http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N550GTX-Ti-M2D1GD5.html

My take is GT 640 cause its the latest as compared to GTX 550 and that it has more VRAM. I want the graphic card for both gaming and computing that includes watching 3D movies and so on.

So will GT 640 be the right decision? If not why? Please give me details about why I should choose the one. Looking forward to detail answer. :)

550TI will be faster in gaming. Vram amount means next to nothing. Its about clock speed, number of shader/cores, memory type/bus width, etc. The 640 is around the speed of the 9800GT, while the 550TI is closer to the GT260.

Both however are rather poor at modern video games. If you want to play modern games at 1080 with high/max details you'll be disappointed in both cards.

like you said earlier nvidia assigns the names, in this
case they might be engaging in some "creative marketing"

Don't get the GTX 550 since it an old card alread..for pretty much the same price, you can get the GTX 650 Ti at least.. consumes less power too.

GT 640 is only good if you are in a really tight budget. It could play games at decent frame rate and can even play some in high settings at 720p. .. Just don't expect too much for this low end card.
