GT? GS? Ultra? What does it all mean?

I currently have a xfx6600 - plain. Nice card does well, but I was considering an upgrade (also since this card has passive coolin it would be perfect for an htpc I plan to guild).

I only do some casual gamming so getting a 7800 is not worth it for me. The 6800's seems to have pretty good pricing, but what is the difference between a 6800GT, GS and ultra. I am pretty sure the Ultra is the top of the 6800 line. NewEgg had a pretty good deal on an 6800GT - 256 mb - PCIe card by eVGA for $100 so I thought this was a good deal.

Is it worth the price? Whould I see a dramatic performace increase?

OK. GT and Ultra were the very first 6800 cards released. The GT was just a slower-clocked Ultra. It also had one slot, and only needed one Molex Connector. Many people sprung for the 6800 GT and clocked it above and beyond the clock of the Ultra. The Ultra was big, and wanted power. Most people clocked GT's to Ultra specs. The GT was fazed out with the Ultra, and now have been replaced by the 6800GS The GT is more powerful as it has all the pipes unlocked, and a few other things that Looking at numerous benchmarks, you will see a great increase in FPS with either the GT or GS. Here are the numbers.

GT 16pixelpipes/6vertexshaders 130nm 350MHz core

GS 12pixelpipes/5vertexshaders 110nm 450MHz core

GS is clocked higher cuz of the 110nm GPU on it, but it has 4 less pipelines. Those may or may not be able to get unlocked.

The XT was "silently" announced to counter the X800GT. It is just a 8-pipeline 6800 Vanilla card. The GS is a *much* better option.

Most likely was a 6600 GT for that price. A 6800GT is a tiny bit better than the 6800GS performance wise but good luck finding one! Go with the 6800GS if you're a casual gamer.

6800GT's are still in massive supply. Also, they are excellent overclockers (not the gs is bad, but the gt takes more advantage of each clock with its extra pipes.)

I wasn't trying to imply a 6800GT could be had for $100... just taking the guy's word for it... that's why I used a quote! Should one be had for that price, it's a bargain. I'm a firm believer in the idea that if sounds too good to be true it probably is.

I stand corrected on the price it was the 6600gt for $100.

But I did find a 6800 for $100 at Monarch (not the GT).

Monarch also had the GS for $150.

GT wins very very slightly, but once you overclock the GT puts it in the GS's butt :O

Yup... My GT (along with my old 2.66HT and 1GB of Ram) play Doom, Quake, Unreal and VERY respectable framerates and settings.
My 68GT is OC'd to 400/1100 with stock cooling. I know it can, and will go higher... Yeah the 68GS is nice.. but would you prefer V4 or a V8... I personally go with the V8 and not the supercharged V4.... Hint hint

For AGP, the GT is better. For PCI-E, they're both evenly matched.
