I have a Gtx 780 HOF edition that runs at about 1300 mhz on air. I have 16 gb of ram and an i5 4670k not over-clocked though i could over clock it if i want to. I have a 1440p monitor and am planing on getting GTA 5 and Witcher 3. I was wondering if i should get a 390x / 980ti when they are released this summer or if i should get another gtx 780 used on ebayand run sli. Ideally i would like to run the games at 60htz maxed out but i am not sure which i should get. Any insight would be helpful.

Two 780 should last you until Pascal is released, but if you are not in a hurry you should wait to see some 390x/980ti benchmarks before buying another 780.
I would get a 390x/980ti for the extra vram, also a single card runs cooler and has less issues than running a sli setup. You will need to wait for the benchmarks to see if a single 390x/980ti can run Witcher 3 maxed on a 1440p screen though.

Yea thats what I was thinking too. I know it might still not be maxed out with 1 card but it would be much closer. The other thing i was thinking is that i could get another 780 for around $250 and that could hold me over until Pascal is released. The only thing is that i am not sure how long that would be. the very early rummors of pascal has it being much faster than maxwell/ kepler and on 16nm. Note that the power for the cards is no problem since i have a 1200 watt power supply. Do you think i should just get a second card and wait for pascal or get a 980ti/ 390x now?

Yea I wont be purchasing anything until July probably but I asked the question now so that if a lot of people said go with the second 780 now I might have bought it This month or next month. Since two 780's will probably end up preforming the same as 1 980ti / 390x i will probably end up going with another 780 because of the significantly lower price.

2x780's won't last you on 1440p unless you want to start turning settings down in game!
I have 2x780's and also run 1440p Asus Rog Swift and have a Samsung 60hz 4k monitor as well, Latest games play but I still have to turn things down, Also the 3gb vram is now showing it's ugly head in the latest titles. 1080p no problem, 1440p playable but 780's now showing their age, 4k some games playable but basically you have to turn down a lot of settings and anti aliasing all the way otherwise you will black screen from not having enough vram.
I would wait it out for 390x and 980ti, Either will be the card to have for 1440p and 4k gaming especially if you are only after 60hz(60 real fps) 1440p with max in game settings.
I basically haven't touched gta v or witcher 3 on these 780's, gta v played a bit of single player and online, have to turn things down ruining game(I want it maxed) witcher 3 runs but 780's sli max settings I only get 30-40fps and that's just the start of game looking out the balcony so I didn't bother playing any further, 30-40fps is not enough for my liking but each to their own.
Also both cards were running at 82c and 80c in witcher 3, that's with decent airflow in case and reference 780's blowing air out the back of case not custom coolers blowing hot air inside.

Wait it out mate, Only a few more weeks to go before new cards are announced.
